Almost half their volleyball team is from outside California. I thought he meant that the university recruits California, not necessarily the volleyball or athletic programs. The volleyball team hasn't been California based for a long time - Fokl, Tom, Nnamani (x2), Richards, Kehoe, Faluke, Girard, Okagbaa, Lutz, Spelman, Inky, Hentz, Grey, Fitzmaurice... just to name a few of the better out to state players. Now, why can't Duke land these players? I don't know. They've all ended up at Stanford for a reason. I know a player who ended up at Stanford who visited Duke, and she was surprised how many players were away for the summer, working in Congress, doing research, traveling abroad, etc. I have the impression that Duke has been more focused on the student part than the athlete part. I'm not sure if that direction is set by Jolie or the admin, or if that was a one year thing when they didn't think they'd be good anyway - no idea - but if you have national team or pro aspirations I could see that being a problem. If you are planning to be a CEO or member of Congress, I could see that being a bonus. The big picture is that Duke finally appears to have a direction in football. Men's and women's basketball don't appear to need a lot of attention, they are winning in soccer. If they choose to spend some more time and resources on volleyball and field hockey, they could. They brought in two assistant coaches in May so I hope they don't dump the staff yet but I see it and the rest of the department is stable enough that if the admin are looking for a project, this could be it. I just wanna point out - there’s no way statistically that 3-4 of the top 10-12 volleyball recruits in the country most years have good enough grades to get into Stanford on merit - it’s a 3% acceptance rate. So 3 girls in the entire top 100 would be average. It seems to me that Stanford makes a lot more concessions on admissions with athletes than some folks want to believe. We had a girl go to Stanford from my high school who had a 3.82 and was 13/72 with like a 31 ACT. Good student, not a great student. But she was great at soccer lol Rubin stated that the plan was to go to Duke with her high school teammate until Stanford showed interest.

That's part of why Stanford wanted to cut sports, they are reserving so many spots for athletes that it made admissions absolutely brutal for non-athletes and was actively limiting how admissions wanted to balance the class.

Ah that’s a good point. I’m sure they draw a ton of completely unqualified applicants based on their prestige that probably drops that rate even lower. Reminds me of UCLA and Northeastern in that regard.

UC Schools no longer require any ACT or SAT test to get into. Crazy right?

KState is looking for a new HC. Any potential candidates for the position? They needed new energy with a new arena opening in 2023.

UCLA fails to qualify for the NCAAs for the 3rd time in 10 years... surely this is enough for even a brain dead AD.
