Some things may already have been mentioned, but things I noted:
First the important stuff
- The US flag relocated from the south end to the north end, vacating the middle space in the south end for ... something else to hang up there.
- Brats cost a $1 more than last year; 'coke' costs a $1 more, as well.
- McCaa leg brace, very much limping around; no brace at all on Hart or Gregorski.
- Student assistant Molly Pistono significantly more blonde than last year. (Rainbow said he wanted a full report here, so... :-)
- During the stretching and 'sidestepping' part of the warmups, Jess Williams' daughter who can't be more than three or four years old, was on the floor in the middle of the players, trying to do each exercise along with them. And it was fricking adorable!
- During the warmups, in addition to the normal set-and-kill drills of 1-balls, and left pin goes, they practiced backrow attack setting to Franklin, Demps, and Wrobel (and maybe others?). I don't remember seeing that before.
It was very much a 'battle of the lefts', particularly in the 3rd set. And they all had really good moments and a few not so good ones; that includes Gregorski and Wrobel. Franklin was as advertised; her jump-serve isn't as "violent" as Orzol's but will probably be equally as effective. Orzol used the jump serve, many effective and of course missed a few.
Izzy was the better of the two setters in the first set, MJ was much better the second than the first, all of which was largely the quality of the passing she/they were getting. Maybe it was because MJ had both Franklin and Demps on her team, she set backrow way more frequently than Izzy; Gregorski and even Robinson had backrow kills from MJ (Dev's during her serving turn). Franklin hit very well from the back row, so if they want to preserve a back row attack presence while still having Demps play front row Opp as part of a 6-2, a 6-rotation Franklin could be that back row attack. SO many options to consider! A two-setter offense is a very real possibility, whether 6-2 or 5-2.
Libero: Both had really good moments and some bad moments; GG had two monster shanks on serve receive, Bramschreiber at least one that I recall. GG's serve was OK but nothing to get excited about, so if you're looking for a way to decide between the two, maybe Bramschreiber gets libero because of a better serve? FWIW, GG played all three sets as L for red, while Bramschriber played only the first two for white; Anna Mac was the libero for white in the 3rd set (and did really well, too).
Maybe it's because we're so used to Hilley to Rettke etc, and maybe because Hart was somewhat limited, but it was easy to not notice middles very much. I'm watching and trying to 'note' as much as I can, and Hart had couple kills, and Dev and CC, too. But it just wasn't a major part of what I was noticing.
Smrek was excellent. Demps was very good. But it was largely a battle of the lefts.
I think the white team had NINE straight set points in the 3rd set before finally ending it at 33-31. That was great fun and good volleyball.
FWIW.
