I thought the announcers were pretty decent. They kept each other in check. And I could understand their commentary as trying to appeal to a wider audience. Here's hoping for more games on ESPN. Oh god you've got to be kidding me. The female announcer, while knowledgeable, was waaaay too hype. She over-emphasized, over-explained, made just a ton of "duh" comments. I turned off the volume. she was a 4 year starting setter for Louisville and actually won miss Kentucky her senior year and competed at miss usa which is pretty interesting. graduated just before DBK took the job. I actually liked her, I think she was the right person to be covering it on ESPN, a lot fo sports fans tuning in probably aren't super familiar with volleyball so having someone to explain things can help the engagement

Why did Salima need to go back to coaching?!?

Eh. It's an in-state rivalry. It's going to be a majority KY audience. I thought she did a great job of appealing to the vast majority of the viewers. FWIW, I appreciated her knowledge of the inner-city HS rivalries. Sacred Heart v. Mercy v. Notre Dame v. Assumption is a pretty special situation with several top HS programs in the country vying for the same state title. Just in the last few years that conference has produced: Riley Rader, Morgan Hentz, Kenzie Maloney, both liberos in this match, Anna DeBeer, Paige Hammons, and the list truly goes on and on. Duke's starting setter, Texas' OH recruit for next year, it's just a bevy of talent and it was cool to hear her talk about it esp the dynamic where both liberos went to the same HS. That stuff, while yes over-explaining, was good, and I don't think there's such a thing as a "duh" comment for the vast majority of casual viewers who simply flipped to ESPN to see what was on.

Watched the replay.
1) KY has so much more potential than I thought they would this year. It's crazy to think that this team could've also had Stumler and Skinner on the roster.
2) Rollins found her fit. She's gotten a lot of crap on this board in the past; this team seems to look to her for guidance, and she's the clear leader on the floor. It was especially apparent at the end of the match when she led the group to the handshake line, and then got everyone together for the post-match on-floor convo. idk what's different about this, perhaps Skinner thinks she's a good fit for a leadership role on his team, but I'm personally glad to see her step up her game and her leadership.
3) Louisville is just really good. I think what makes them so special is that they respond to pressure really well. Obv coming back from 18-24 against Purdue made that evident, but they played better in key moments inside their rival's gym. DBK is someone players don't want to disappoint, and her teams so far do not disappoint.
4) One of the higher level matches of the year so far, which was nice to see! Good match overall.

Notice how I did not say anything about the setting on either side of the net. She didn’t respond to my invitation so clearly she wants to stay on the sh*tlist

I couldn't get myself to log into Volleytalk last night after the match. So I went and got drunk instead oops
Overall, a really outstanding match (probably the best match I've watched this season). Honestly, proud of UK for forcing a 5th set. Losing in 5-sets to the #3 team in the country is nothing to be ashamed of... and based on this team's floor (see: Wisconsin) this very easily could have been a sweep.
It was nice to see UK's passing improve as compared to the Wisky match (although there were still some really tough stretches). And, as we been knew, UK's offense is top tier. I think they truly have 5 hitters who can all carry a heavy offensive load, if needed. I really hate to say this, but biggest weakness right now is Grome. She often sets way in front or way behind the hitter (especially on the right) and tries to do too much OOS (which may be coaching). And like Lilley (at points in her career) seems to be overly reliant on setting the LS. If she can bring back some of her freshman self, I think UK could be a top 5 team this year.
Gotta love Louisville and DBK. So much respect for her coaching and program. Louisville obviously has some issues too, the biggest being offense, IMO. They're definitely missing Stephenson. But Scott may be the most underrated libero in the country, and Lazaro honestly seems like the perfect fit for UofL.
As a UK fan, feeling better than after the Wisconsin match... obviously. But genuinely not looking forward to the Nebraska game lol.

Oh, and I don't mind enthusiastic commentating. But what's the famous saying? "Act like you belong here?"
Continuously freaking out because volleyball is on ESPN, doesn't make it seem like volleyball belongs on ESPN. Kind of like a kid who finally can sit at the adult table, and who won't shut up about finally sitting at the adult table.
Volleyball is an incredibly entertaining sport, and these are two top programs, who gave us a great game. No need to act like ESPN gave volleyball some incredible gift.

Debeer and Chaussee abused Grome's block, but that's a serving/rotation problem IMO (because Grome's height isn't going to change overnight). Tealer had an uncharacteristically bad blocking game. I'm actually shocked that Lamb and Rollins only had 1 block between them!? My memory says they did better than that, so maybe they were getting some good block touches (or maybe Jones just isn't that terminal oops).
But yeah, our back court defense (and passing) isn't at a UK level. Honestly, our players look like they've fallen asleep at times in the backrow.

Beavin just does not look nearly as dynamic on defense as last year. Also I was incredibly negative last night but like they really were just crushing my soul over here and it was stupid stuff lmao
