Volleyball Canada has announced that Brandie Wilkerson will team up with Melissa Humana-Paredes for the upcoming Olympics qualification cycle. Sarah Pavan will not be retiring from the international circuit - she is pairing up with Sophie Bukovec and taking a run at Paris...

Shocker. I wonder what took Brandie and MHP so long to commit unless it had to come through Canada.
I am also not convinced there is a clear #1 team between these 2.
There goes any flicker of hope for the McNamara's.

LOL, once we figured out here on VolleyTalk that the previous teams were passing up a chance at Pro Tour Finals they knew the cat was out of the bag and had to announce something! volleyball.ca/en/news/new-canadian-beach-volleyball-teams-begin-journey-to-paris-2024

Same, it seems like the Chicago pairing was the writing on the wall which is disappointing because I liked Sophie was building with Brandie, but this is the clear correct choice. Also, I think Pavan is pretty much on the downslope, Sophie should take this opportunity to learn from a vet, but also pick up tendencies of what not to do.

For me the real question is who’s going to be coaching them. Will either Mel or Sarah try to get Scott Davenport back?

There goes any flicker of hope for the McNamara's. the McNamaras have settled into their place in the game, which is where you would expect two 5'9" players to be in the modern game. They are lower end to middle of the Challenge circuit. Even if Pavan had retired, wouldn't have made any difference to CAN2.

We will now find out what Brandie's true ceiling is. If you look at the great tournament Bansley had in Tokyo Olympics, and where they finished, that is what I would consider Wilkerson's ceiling.
As an aside, the FIVB World Championships has such strange, uneven draws with teams that don't even belong in E16 that I don't have any confidence in results from that tournament in evaluating a team's strength... vs. a series of tournaments throughout the year. I think the Wilkerson/Bukovec 2nd in WC this year was a red herring. Same with Theo/Chaim's 5th.
For regular E16 podium finishes, Wilkerson has to rework her serve. It has to be a weapon rather than a weakness... That's two levels ov improvement. I already see it is better lately than a year ago. If she an do that, more power to them.

Anyone know details on why Pavan and MHP split? Poor finishes? And why did Davenport quit coaching them shortly after the 2021 Cancun events?

I don't think they had the worst season since they won an Elite and ran into Duda/AP way too often but looking at matches they lost, it often seems like MHP had 3-4 errors per set. That jibes with her AVP appearances this year where she could not keep the ball in against top competition. (Around 3 or more errors per set in the losses) Contrast that to 2019, when they were neck and neck with the Ateam all year and she had 1.5 errors per set and hit .447. These two have been playing schitzophrenic volleyball for years but I think because Pavs looks awkward even when playing well, we tend to overestimate how much of that teams up and down play was her fault versus Sara's

I think that answer is a resounding no and as much as I loved the Brandi/Sophie pairing, this obviously makes the most sense for success for Canada.

She can't be the player KWJ was because at every single stage of their careers KWJ was a far superior player to Pavs, but can Sara hold on to her ability? Don't see why not. April is an interesting parallel because one of the major reasons she has played so well into her older years is her abnormal size for a defender. Pavs isnt getting any shorter and as Kloth has shown, even slower giants can have success. MHPavs needed to break up, they had been underperforming for a long time now, but I would guess Sara has a few good years left in her. Does she have the patience to work with a young player as that player grows? That seems more doubtful

That seems more doubtful Does she really have a choice, Bansley seems to be the only other option and it isn't like they would have any more success than she would have with Sophie. Plus, I think Heather seems pretty comfortable in her roll with team Canada now based off her Instagram posts.

Anyone know details on why Pavan and MHP split? Poor finishes? And why did Davenport quit coaching them shortly after the 2021 Cancun events? From the recent Sandcast with Theo "they had some issues" in Cancun which led to Davenport quitting. Sounded a bit sinister but nobody was willing to share any details.
