Agreed that Brandie is definitely the winner in this deal. But is Sophie really overhyped? I actually don't see too many people talking amazing things about her on here or anywhere. Maybe they do and I'm oblivious to it. I don't know. I definitely would take 5, maybe up to 8 US defenders over her (I know she is Canadian and it's not a comparison with any merit, just saying).
As for MHP, I think she is a bit overhyped as well. Many of you put her in the Duda class, and she is not close in my opinion. I'd compare her to Mariafe. Still really good but definitely not carrying a team. Definitely the right choice for Brandie though

Pavan has been involved with two (one speculated) seemingly bitter break-ups. One as a rookie to the scene with Bansley, and then as a vet with MHP. I'm sad for Bukovec cause I think this is a dead-end pair. Pavan is visibly older and less athletic, and her setting is not her strong suit. I can't help but imagine MHP was frustrated by not deciding to pair with Brandie and then seeing Pavan give up on any remotely long rally one year into the run to Paris. I actually think Pavan's setting is much better than Brandie's. But I agree that she's not as dynamic at age 36 as she was a few years ago, so Mel and Brandie probably made the right choice. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I wouldn't count Sarah/Sophie out of the race just yet. Clearly there's more to the MHP/Pavan split that hasn't been made public. Pavan wasn't shy about discussing her split with Heather, so maybe she'll be willing to talk about what happened with MHP and/or Scott Davenport. I do wonder how close they came to splitting after Tokyo and whether Sarah would've even considered Sophie a year ago. I haven’t watched them play in a while but remember when Mel used to jump onto Pavan and hug her like a koala bear after they won? The last year of their partnership seemed just like a business deal and nothing else.

Anyone know details on why Pavan and MHP split? Poor finishes? And why did Davenport quit coaching them shortly after the 2021 Cancun events? After several years of being together, latent emotional issues can take the upper hand. One-upmanship. Who is the better player on a successful team? Leading to a lack of communication and misunderstandings. All of these contributed to some of the wear and tear that culminated in Sarah going solo at the Chicago AVP. Followed by MHP rejoining her university indoor teammate in Chicago. Good luck to both teams. Personally, I would be surprised if either became a top ten FIVB team in 2023-24.

You say this as if possibly pavam made the initial move of going separate ways It was rumored that Pavan went solo on the AVP, first with Ponnet, then with Graudina, because of the uncertainty surrounding Mel’s green card issues. In retrospect, it seems like the split was brewing for awhile and perhaps Sarah did make the first move. It never made sense why they played Austin together but then Mel couldn’t find a partner for MBO.

Same, it seems like the Chicago pairing was the writing on the wall which is disappointing because I liked Sophie was building with Brandie, but this is the clear correct choice. Also, I think Pavan is pretty much on the downslope, Sophie should take this opportunity to learn from a vet, but also pick up tendencies of what not to do. Lol no it wasn’t Sophie is overhyped, Mel is leagues above her Brandie won big out of this Are you arguing for the same point I am making in this was the right choice?

Don’t want to read too much into this, but Scott Davenport “liked” this post but not the Sarah/Sophie announcement post a few days ago.

I was wondering the same thing. Seems a bit too pointed to not be 🤷♂️

yep, same thing Team Hughes said about Claes. Hard to root for a person who finds it necessary to put that out there in social media, right or wrong as to the facts.
