Rutgers was originally founded as Queen's College, the second-oldest pre-revolutionary university in New Jersey (the oldest is Princeton). At that time, Rutgers athletes were known as the Queensmen. In 1825 the university was given its current name, and a century later, the mascot was changed to the Chanticleer, a fighting rooster from the medieval fable Reynard the Fox, which was used by Geoffrey Chaucer in the Canterbury Tales.

Some were dissatisfied with this foul imagery surrounding Rutgers athletes. Football coach Harvey Harman summarized the issue: "You can call it the Chanticleer, you can call it a fighting cock, you can call it any damn thing you want, but everybody knows it's a chicken."

In 1955, the mascot was changed to the Scarlet Knight after a campus-wide election.

In the early 80s, the Pail and Shovel party (UW student government) had a plank in its platform that the University of Wisconsin change its name to the University of New Jersey so it could be a prestigious eastern school.

the book "If at all possible, involve a cow: the book of college pranks" by Steinberg has a nice section on that era of Wisconsin student government

15-7 UW. After a GG ace.
The badgers look a little better with GG in there.
Still not as solid on the block with Smrek in the middle.

Well, that was easy. I think there were as many RU SE’s as there were RU points scored.
