This needs to be a tournament respected and played in by the teams just out the NCAA tourney. It’s a great experience for the players and can help build programs toward post season play. There are some good teams that got snubbed. This a an opportunity to show something. VB should see the value of this and get behind it.

FWIW, I was told in another thread, "teams pay the first $15k in travel costs. If total travel expenses exceed that for the entirety of the tournament, the NIVC covers the rest." That is still a lot of money for schools that don’t have football and schools who don’t draw fans. What about lodging and meals? Schools pay their own too? I would like to think that lodging, at least, is included in "travel costs" but I'm not sure what the stipulations are. Just was passing along relevant information.

here is the gist of how the NIVC field is constructed:
- first off, for each of the 32 NCAA Division I conferences, the NIVC extends an automatic qualifier spot to the team from that conference that finishes highest in that conference's regular season standings, but did not receive a bid to the NCAA tournament. If all 32 of those teams accepted the invite, then that would be the tournament field.
But there are always (at least thus far) teams that decline that AQ invite, in which case that conference's spot becomes part of the "at large" pool. in order to be eligible or an at-large invite, a team must either: have and overall record of .500 or better OR be in the top 120 RPI As at-large bids become available (via AQ teams declining), the NIVC will go down the list of teams in the RPI ranking (that aren't in the NCAA tourney, meet the [.500 or top 120] requirement and haven't already declined an invite to this year's tournament) and extend an invite to them, until they get a full field of 32. (or if there aren't enough teams that express an interest, then they'd pare down the field).
I'd imagine the NIVC contacts probable/possible teams in the time leading up to NCAA selection sunday to gauge interest and extend conditional invites ("if you should happen to not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, would you be interested in playing in the NIVC?" or something along those lines).

Clemson finished last in the ACC. evidently the NIVC changed their qualifying standards, since Clemson had a losing record and their RPI wasn't in the top 120

There must have been a large pool of “no” since no BW nor PAC 12 team accepted invites. At least 3 Big West team would have qualified….Cal Poly, Long Beach and Santa Barbara….maybe even UC Irvine. That is 4 teams that could have made the field much more competitive. Also UCLA from the PAC 12 could have won it all. All decided against going.

A 12-18 Santa Clara team also got invited so the requirement of being a .500 team was thrown out the window with Clemson and Santa Clara. Santa Clara might have been the AQ from the WCC Going down the list of the conference standings: - San Diego, BYU, LMU, and Pepperdine all made the NCAA tournament - Pacific and Santa Clara both ended up 8-10 in conference matches (Pacific forfeited a match at BYU, which doesn't count in the overall record or RPI, but counts in the conference standings). The two teams split in their head-to-head matches, each winning one match 3-1. I don't know what the additional tiebreak would be and don't feel like trying to look it up. IMO, Santa Clara should get the nod just because they actually played all their conference matches without forfeit. And the .500 rule doesn't apply to a conference's AQ There must have been a large pool of “no” maybe so. but so what? They have 32 teams that want to play, so more power to them!

Yeah, the NIVC specifically lists them as an automatic qualifier.

They should somehow play this tournament super fast and the winner should get an automatic spot in the NCAA tournament. That way a team like Texas State could prove the committee wrong. I realize this is not possible but would be interesting.

I realize this is not possible but would be interesting. more realistic would be to add "first four" games, expanding the tournament field to 68 like they do in MBB. but that wouldn't really solve anything, and the 69th team would just be outraged about not getting a bid and I doubt there would be enough interest in such a setup to get it put in place
