I would be more confident about tomorrow's game if it weren't for the fact the last time I saw Texas get out of Regionals (in person) was 2016. So far back that I had to use wikipedia to remind me it was a 3-0 over Creighton to get there. And then wikipedia reminds me that the game before that was the marathon 3-2 over BYU. Creighton match, don't remember it. BYU, memory of massive screaming at the court.
Problem solved - you don't go watch in person.

I think Texas fan attendance will be heavy for this game, even though it is at 1:30-ish. I had 3 spare tickets which were snatched up by a friend of mine at work for her and her two daughters. She and one of her daughters are taking the day off from work to attend (like me). Then I had others asking me to help find them spare tickets. One was my daughter's HS vball coach who is taking the day off just to watch the game at home. The tickets I almost scored for her, but couldn't are being used by the original owners who rarely make home games anymore because she's elderly and doesn't like the drive into town (she's an OG who thinks traffic in Austin is a disaster). She's attending with her friend, who essentially now drives her to all Longhorn games.
It will be heavily burnt orange. Now if we could just teach everyone to cheer loudly on our serves.

This is all apart of Marquette’s long con to take over the Texas athletic department.
Phase one was Shaka, phase two was the womens basketball team beating Texas earlier this season, final phase is womens volleyball winning a S16 match at Gregory.
Time to shock the world.

When you talk about taking over the Texas athletic department regarding Shaka Smart, is that a euphemism for doing Texas fans everywhere an immense favor? I will enjoy watching Shaka's career progression at Marquette. When I looked it up, I think there's been one coach, Tom Crean, who has lasted longer than 6 years at Marquette since Al McGuire. I don't expect Shaka to increase that list. He's a fraud and a dud. Glad Marquette has him. Marquette winning a set against Texas will be a tremendous accomplishment. Which I think they're capable of. They're not winning the match, though.

It feels like this article just suddenly cuts off, but here you go. The matchup from a Marquette outlet's perspective: www.anonymouseagle.com/2022/12/7/23496258/marquette-golden-eagles-volleyball-ncaa-tournament-preview-texas-longhorns"I believe this is the first time that Marquette has ever faced the #1 team in the country. The official MU record book on GoMarquette.com doesn’t have a rundown of every single match against a ranked team, so I’m being forced to settle for merely doing a Control-F search for #1 to check, but nothing comes back. In fact, MU has just one meeting all-time with the #2 team in the country, a 2015 NCAA tournament loss to Minnesota. All-told, Thursday afternoon’s match will be just the 10th time in program history, again as far as I can tell, that Marquette has ever played a top five team. Marquette is just 1-8 all time in the previous nine contests, with the win coming in MU’s 2019 visit to Wisconsin."____________________________________________"Texas’ offense is ruthlessly efficient, getting 11.48 assists per set from senior setter Saige Ka’aha’aina-Torres on their way to 13.64 as a team on 18.63 kills per set. I want to make this clear: It’s a “first to 25, win by two” sport, and the Longhorns get nearly 75% the way there on average just on their kills. Blocks and aces and attacking errors are for nerds."_________________________________________________Not sure I completely understand the point here. According to the official Texas site, the Longhorns average 14.53 kills per set. The completely overwhelmed Marquette Golden Eagles - as insinuated by this article - are dwarfed by that number, only averaging...14.57 kills per set? It seems to me statistically Marquette terminates even more of their points per set (albeit it's practically a tie) than Texas. I think this article goes into the "mistakes were made" category. Which happens. The key difference between the two teams' attack is that Marquette may be the most balanced in the country, with 4 players (the 2nd left pin, the two MBs, and the OPP) averaging 2.14/2.24/2.31/2.68 (Reitsma is unsurprisingly the 2.68) with Hamilton the chief terminal go to at 3.52. Texas predominantly goes to their top 4 attackers, with a much bigger delta, at 4.21/3.68/2.26/2.25, with O'Neal and Phillips possessing nearly identical numbers at the bottom of that list. Caffey as the primary 2nd MB averages 1.53. Texas simply goes to their pins waaaaaaaay more often than Marquette does.

Shaka needs the kids who will play within his system. His system doesn't cater to 5 star talents who want minutes and shots. Marquette's program is built on under the radar guys who outwork their recruiting rankings. Shaka was great at VCU and will be great at Marquette. He wasn't great at Texas. There's nothing fraudulent about him at all, though. He's as genuine as they come.
