Oh. I'm with her. I bailed quick. Gore is no stranger to volleyball, but he seemed to be in a fog. It doesn't help that his voice and cadence lends that impression too - like he's had one too many bourbons. I prefer Brandy in my old fashioneds before Wisconsin volleyball matches, but I digress. I do find it really annoying that Gore always gives cop out answers in these type of articles. Who do you think will get to the final four? “Gore: Your guess is as good as mine”. Then why are we even interviewing you!?!?! Get someone from VT on this panel in that case. And in the article before the tournament he honest said something like “whoever wins all their matches”. Are you kidding me!? www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/35203971/ncaa-volleyball-2022-regionals-expert-breakdown-predictions?platform=ampThese are the answers that you hear from two kinds of people 1) politicians trying not to make anyone angry and 2) conmen completely out of their depth. The problem is that when you are announcing a game, you can't get away with it. People have names. Points are given for specific reasons. You are supposed to know. And you can't lie -- the refs are literally signing the answers that you don't know! The team that wins the point goes back and serves. The names are on the damn shirts! You can't just wing it by saying "and remember, you have to win by two!" I'll be brutal here. Gore is out of his depth. I think he has this job because ESPN really does not respect the vball audience yet. Doesn't in fact think there is a vball audience - just casual, mostly accidental voyeurs. They still think people are tuning in out of some vague curiosity while flipping through options - like they'd watch a flamenco dancer for bit on PBS without understanding anything before moving on to Love Island.

When I read your post I was just going to say that Gore is like the Trump of volleyball announcers, but that’s exactly what you said in different words.

I did not play volleyball. It only took me half a season of watching on person to figure out the signals so about 8-10 matches). Gore has been the announcer for abou a decade.
His bio says he covers all sports. So probably none of them well. Except tennis.
Bring back Adam Amin.

I think Pitt can actually pull the upset here. I’m not sure they will but they have more than a fighting chance. I think this is the most even these teams have been in the regionals. Wisconsin is so tough at home. Robinson vs Buzzerio. Pitt has played her solid all year. Wisconsin looked to be cruising and then forgot how to pass for 2 sets against Penn State, Pitt is a good serving team.
Not sure I’m ready to pick a winner just yet definitely anticipating a barn burner for this one.

I just watched some of the match again after watching the Florida/Pitt match, this time with the audio on. He seemed pretty familiar with the players in the early match and, from what I could tell, seemed to call the match right. But once the PSU/UW match started, he just seemed to go off the rails for some reason. Maybe I couldn't pick up the mistakes as easily in the other match, but I don't think so. He frequently got confused and had no clue what was actually going on for long sections. Maybe he just got tired? I actually found his color colleague just as annoying, but in a different way. She was making every play seem like the most incredible thing ever seen. And yet you could hear her groan and gasp in the background in response to plays. That was the more telling contribution in most cases. I didn't mind hearing a real time gut response.

I'll have to say, I'm not sure why this would be considered an upset, especially after the UW/PSU match. I see this as a pretty even match up. But then I look at the votes, and I think maybe I am just too critical of the badgers.

Substitution limitations depend on what's going on with the rest of your lineup. Fairbanks sets and hits, so that frees up a sub. Pitt uses six subs per rotation. A team can get away with that most of the time - Wisconsin has done so plenty in past years, does it less so this year (by limiting when they choose to use a serving sub). But you don't always get away with it, if a set is heavy with 'first ball sideouts'. So what is Pitt's "plan B" for when subs get short? Does Klika stay in to serve? Does Ennis play six rotation? Does Buzzerio? Did Dalton when she was available? I don't see much of a problem with Pitt running out of subs. Fairbanks can just set 6 rotations and Buzzerio can hit out of the back row and they'll be fine.

Akeo is now a very secondary setter to cover for the fact that Fairbanks just can't set herself when in the front row. Heck, Buzzerio can set in a pinch, like she did for Iowa. They are covered. The question is the passing. If they are using 3 subs, it means they have concerns on that front about their OHs.

By the way, Fairbanks' serve looks pretty wicked. Pitt won a couple of sets from Florida on the back of service runs from Fairbanks. She was aiming high on the passers' platforms, which was what gave the badgers fits against PSU.

Have more ranked wins, defending national champs. The list goes on. I do think their performance against Penn State wasn’t reassuring but the silver lining is they did close it in the 5th

Dear old people and faux fans: Some of us will be standing and cheering. If you do not wish to participate, please watch on TV. Also, tell us what expensive seats you bought so we can sit in them. Sincerely, A fan approaching "old people" status. C’mon…gotta shake the place up for these kids. Yeah Julia. We love you too.

I pointed out that Pitt does a couple of unusual-to-weird things with their rotation, and asked someone who seemed familiar with them what Plan B would be.
