If we could have serve received decent it would have been fun to watch us against Texas. Our size up front would have been a challenge for them. They win I think but they don't sweep us. That's the thing. We cannot serve receive with GG and Franklin. They break down again good serving teams and Texas was one of the best. This is why I was surprised Shanel didn’t get more of a go against Pitt. Her bump setting is not as good as GGs but her serve receive always looked solid and was obvs good enough to get Big 12 libero of the year.

Jenna Wenaas is in the portal! Talk about an upgrade at a pin! She'd most certainly push Julia to DS and with a setter, make 5-1 work. Look at Orzol's numbers - offense, defense, serving, serve-receive - for 2022 vs Wenass for 2021 when she was playing left, and they are essentially interchangeable.

Wenaas has a lot more upside...and Wenaas was hitting off Shaffmaster who couldn't locate a set to the outside until late last year.

GG had 713 attempts and was 'charged with 46 errors, a 0.935 rate.

I’m not sure… she would’ve been an upgrade at passing, but would she have been an upgrade in transition? The team in 2022 saw their strength as being able to score in transition. So keeping GG in was integral to that.

Any chance to compare passing scores (albeit Shanels numbers are limited except for when GG was out)?

Yes, one could compare passing numbers, if you have access to the service that collects that data. I do not.

Orzol would be a phenomenal libero, if she’s not so worried about hitting, trust she’ll be a very solid passer and defender…. And a court captain the girls will rally around.
We need better setting options, I love Izzy, she’s just not a true setter at this level… I’ll take her as backrow sub for Robinson any day! I never been a fan of MJ.
I really hope Wrobel doesn’t leave us, again Shef’ imho did a poor job of managing her, she has way better upside than Franklin.
I wonder if CC is able to pass, I love her on court presence — she’s athletic enough she might just be able to hang on the pin. I think of her like former Nebraska outside Hannah Werth….Just physical, fearless, finds a way, surprises you with some of her quick movements and dynamic enough to be on the court all 6 rotations.
Shrek must stay in the middle!
Let’s see if portal brings any new game-changers.

I'm not completely on board with orzol as the libero but if it comes out that she has stress fractures again and that hampered her the 2nd half of the season I could be convinced. The coaching staff having a full spring to work with GG and Franklin on serve receive will bring big improvements I think. Demps for Franklin in the back row would have been nice to see but I just don't think we had enough subs to do it running a 6 - 2. I'd be shocked if we aren't running the 6 - 2 next year minus a huge surprise.

Orzol could pull a reverse Nunneviller if there are stress fractures again. But I think her problem was more about setting, and being OOS a lot against a set block a lot of the year. Franklin has the advantage of being 6'4 in those situations. I also don't think she is quite as quick as GG in defense, and she is really smart are taking shots that get the other team out of system.
But throwing Orzol in at libero in a 6-2 won't help anything if the two remaining passers can't pass better. That has to be the big emphasis this spring and summer - get more dependable passing from Franklin and GG, so that servers can't just ignore the best passer. I'd like teams to be forced to go to Orzol in an attempt to wear her down. The team has to be in system more.
Also, the sets have to be better when the badgers are in system. The setters improved a lot over the year. They need to keep that progress up.

Orzol hit for a slightly better percentage this year than last, had slightly more blocks and a better blocks per set than last year, a slightly better digs per set than last year, and a better ace/error serve ratio. And exactly the same "serve reception percent".
So...

Speaking of, watching Akana last night reminded me of how much I liked her game when she was at Nebraska and a kind of player I wish we can bring in and or recruit defensively. Great server, good in serve receive and will just fly all over the court not letting the ball drop.
