... TTA serving blew up a couple sets - one breaking open a set, the other helping UW come back. ... I noticed the obvious more while doing this - that two of WI serve receive rotations have the ls/rs swapped (vs the one in the 5-1). Obvious to everyone but me, I mean - it was just more noticeable to me this time. I guess it adds to position flexibility in case of great need, which I hope we've had enough of. Q1: Is TTA doing a topspin serve? I thought it looked like that in the video montage they had on Twitter. Q1a: If so, is she reasonably consistent on it or might it be like Frank last year where it's not consistent enough to use in matches? Comment on switching lefts and rights - that really is the standard thing to do when your setter is in position 1 (back right, which of course happens twice as often in the 6-2) - otherwise you have a stack on the left where one of them has to get all the way over to the right pin to hit. You still have the stack when you have your OH hitting on the right but then the stack only has to get to the left side and the middle. In the past two years, I think we haven't done it because they didn't want Devyn and Anna to have to hit on the left, but those two are experienced enough now that it seems like it's time to let them do it. Certainly all of our OH's are capable of hitting on the right pin. If you watch the USNT when they have Annie Drews in there at opposite, they actually run her behind the serve receive line in order to get her over to the right side to hit (I think they called it "Buffalo girl" or something like that). TTA's served looked like top spin. In a brief search of my notes, I think she had 3 service errors? But caused a ton of havoc so the net gain was huge. Maybe WI will have Wrobel and Dev hit left that one rotation but do something different when Anna is RS ? One of the funnier vb moments I've seen is when Annie got pegged like in a shooting gallery when doing that run around

Does anyone know if any matches in Italy will be broadcast on the Internet? (Today and tomorrow, the first one should start in half an hour). Thanks!

Apparently TTA has returned to the US to attend her graduation from Northwestern.

Loss in 5 sets to the Italian National Team (B). Without TTA or Franklin, a respectable result, though it certainly sounds like (based on Badgers VB and Punzel's Twitter accounts) they had their chances to win.
Really curious as to whom played for the Italia B team. I think their VNL squad has 30 or so players and there's probably no reason for anyone over the age of, say, 26 to play on the B team, but even that should leave a really healthy pool of talent for them to choose from.

It finished 3-2 for Italy B. (25-20, 26-24, 19-25, 13-25, 15-11)
They were pretty much all A1 players in Italy (even a teammate of Carlini stated at OH)

Badgers lose in 5 to the Italian national (B) team. 20-25 24-26 25-19 25-13 11-15
Pretty good showing without TTA. Would love to see some stats.

But yeah, I'd expect that this team was trotting out some pretty good talent. My guess is a team which isn't as talented overall as AU was but is much more in form due to, you know, playing more than a couple months a year. But I don't know, really.

Seeing their list (Italy B) of OHs, Orzol probably too.

I'm mostly interested in how Wrobel performed, since we've seen so little of her in match play.

The picture of Anna Smrek next to Nigel Hayes should put to bed any doubts about her being an honest 6'9". She might be closer to 6'10". To be fair, Nigel's listed 6'8" in college was nonsense. At the combine, Nigel measured 6’6” and change barefoot and 6’7.25” in shoes

Punzel article of the first Italy match (La Crosse newspaper, because it was the one I didn't hit a paywall the first time I tried): lacrossetribune.com/sports/college/volleyball/wisconsin-volleyball-carter-booth-nba-finals/article_7ea831eb-f65f-5188-a70e-467d8220892a.htmlThe Italian team is preparing for the World University Games, so probably some real talent there. MJ served 11 points in a row in the 4th set. Orzol 13 kills, Booth 11, Smrek and Robinson 9 each (The opposite of 'All Temi, all the time' the other day). Wrobel 4 kills, 5 errors on 13 swings. About Wrobel, Sheffield said “Against most of the really good teams she’s been off on the sideline. She’s gotten a little bit of time when we’ve had a comfortable lead or she’s gotten in for a short burst. This was a time where it’s no, you’re staying in there, you’ve got to figure this thing out. There was a lot of the match where it was a little too much for her. That’s why we play matches like this because now you’re forced to respond and it pulls really good things out. This was a really important match for her.”

Rematch going on with the Italian National Team right now.
