And Carter Booth is on the bench? Crawford HIGHLY unlikely.

Yea this feels a bit like what I posted earlier when there was chat re: Podraza maybe coming and us moving to a 5-1. Who of these players do you sit: -Robinson: Just no. Multi-year All American and one of our best offensive weapons. -Booth: Can't imagine you get a first-team All-B1G to transfer and sit. -Crawford: She's too good at too many things. This is maybe an odd comparison but she reminds me of Josh Gasser on the UW men's basketball team that made multiple final four runs. She just does all the little stuff (can serve as a middle, can run as backup setter) and can be a force with her block (hello 12 blocks vs PSU). -Smrek: 6'9" right side who was also the National Championship MVP? Again don't see her sitting, especially if she can block alongside Booth against another team's best left sides. So then you move over to the left side: -TTA: You don't get a one-year grad transfer All-American to come unless they start. She's starting IMO. -Franklin: First-Team All-B1G and can obviously go off (see: Nebraska) -Orzol: Second-team All-B1G our best defending left What I'm thinking is what I posted yesterday but looks something like a 6-2 with: -Setters: Ashburn and Hammill -MBs: Crawford and Booth -Opps: Smrek and Robinson -Lefts: TTA and Franklin -DS: Orzol: She comes in for whoever is having the harder time passing between TTA and Franklin and we run fewer serving subs. Could also obvs stay in at left if we're running low -Lib: GG -Subs: Wrobel is first one in for front row subs/injuries ala Demps this last year. I just don't know what else you do with all that potential front row talent.

I'll say these 2 things, if we get to a fifth set where you can DS both lefts, it will be really hard to beat this team. And, I think GG is a key. The team simply needs better passing from the libero so that whatever offense can be better in FBSO.

Man, what a wonderful host of problems Sheffield and staff have to work out until fall!
August can't come fast enough...

The idea of having GG, Franklin and TTA all passing at the same time would likely make all the badger problems from this past year much worse.
Orzol is by far our best passer. She has to be in SR for 6 rotations given the other passing options - if only to force teams to avoid her in service. She could become libero, but then her blocking and hitting are completely out of the equation, and you also lose GGs OOS setting. I'm really thinking Orzol stays as 6 ro OH and either TTA/Franklin goes to the right.
Wrobel is the wildcard here. If she can learn to pass and defend as well as Orzol, then she could take Orzol's place, but I think that's unlikely. I think it more likely that Wrobel backs up TTA on the right and competes with Franklin on the left.
Unless there are substantial improvements from GG and Franklin passing, it's really hard to imagine a best lineup that doesn't have Orzol in it as an OH.

The beauty of spring season is that a lot can change. MJ and Hammill will have more training to work on chemistry with their hitters, Temi will get new coaching on blocking and passing, and GG will have a semester to work on passing and being "more stable". We don't know the ceiling of these players, which is exciting, but also difficult for a volleyball forum dedicated to speculating about the future.
Orzol is a very consistent player, she plays every part of the game well. But in long rallies and out of system plays, it was hard for her to score bc she little. But she brings so much steadiness to the team + her versatility-in my experience these kinds of athletes always find a place on the court. My educated guess is that in spring competitions, the coaches will be getting looks from her on the outside as well as in the libero jersey. I think she played libero in a spring game last year as well. GG will need to earn the libero spot, just like TTA will need to earn the OH spot and I could see Orzol in the libero role with GG as DS just as easily as vice versa. TTA is a terminal hitter and more physical, but may not be a great passer right now, but that could change after a couple months working with Britt. It seems obvious to me that TTA will end up hitting on the left side. In a 6-2 offense you really need great outsides to make it work, and besides the passing meltdown, winning long rallies with the outsides made winning hard for Bucky.
So right now I'm kind of thinking the big question is not who will be the outside, but who will be libero-GG or Orzol. And there's a lot of soft skills/chemistry factors that go into that lineup decision.
The other question mark is whether Smrek will play middle or right. She is obvs more comfortable hitting first tempo sets and gets too far under the ball on high back sets-that's when she would sail them out of bounds. But she is also not as quick blocking pin to pin so it makes sense to keep her on the right for blocking purposes. Can you imagine hitting against an Anna Smrek when she doesn't have to move or read so quick? Geezus.
And good on Devyn for being so versatile (and fun to watch!!!!) I think she thrives on the right and I'd like to see more X plays where she hits out of the middle from the right with the middle running behind.

I'm thinking of 2 outsides that helped their team win the NCAA tourneys without being great passers-Plummer & Eggleston. Ostensibly Franklin and Orzol could pass 7/8 of the court and just give TTA a tiny sliver. As long as the libero is a strong passer there are many creative passing formations to hide a not great passing OH. That's kind of what you would want to do anyways with an L1 so that teams can't target her to get her out of the offense. So I guess this all circles back to my original point that I think the question is not who is going to be L1, but who will be libero and I'm seeing Orzol make a case for herself.

I see TTA sliding into Demps role as a relief hitter when things slow down on court. I’d bet she is totally fine with not being a heavy work load go-to starter after years of doing that at Northwestern. She was wearing down as each season progressed the last few years & if her focus is on playing pro after this season, a relief role that is less taxing on her body may be perfect for her👍 trust me, tta is probably not 'totally fine' with taking demps role as a non starter who only plays when needed. she's also too good to have that role. match play is not what wears down theses girls bodies either... they're practicing 3 + hours a day 5 days a week... the hour and a half it takes them to play a match is not some huge 'rest' for them. its the difference between playing 15 hours a week instead of 17. bench girls are still playing tons of vb. it would take a starter about 10 matches to get as many reps as a bench player does in just one week of practice. This right here. Except that itz hard to pin down exactly who or what is “totally fine” with these developments, save for Sheff and company. Although, itz awfully hard for me to believe that a bright and talented TTA is anything but satisfied with her decision. And even if it means that she’ll have to compete for playing time, just like everyone else on this frighteningly talented team…only made better now with her addition.

Some background on TTA: For what it's worth, it seems like she will be a great teammate who fill fit into the culture well. She also probably will enjoy not being the player who has to carry the team on her back every game. I also thought it was noteworthy that she led the team in kills, aces and digs in her third year. Seems like she has the tools to be a six rotation player.
Lovvvvvvveeeee!

This is Sheffield's first/only single year "one and done" transfer, isn't it? The other transfers all came with multiple years of eligibility?
