Love what I’m seeing from A&M and Mizzou. Big props to their coaching staffs - their turnaround/upward trajectories (with mostly the same players) is awesome to see.

TAMU, maybe (but Perkins, Mounoke, and Manning would like a word), but Mizzou's roster is nearly unrecognizable from last year. Kudos for sure to these staffs, but it's not like they stood pat. Heck, Mizzou wouldn't have been able to field a team if they were relying on carryovers from last year.

How are my LSU peeps feeling about Year 2 of Coach Johnson? I know there was a ton of excitement about Demps's arrival and talk of conference championships. What do you think is the problem? I have my own, arm's-length theories, but I'm curious about what actual LSU followers/fans think.

I have my own, arm's-length theories, but I'm curious about what actual LSU followers/fans think. Been watching this team quite a bit. In general, I would say defense, ball control and attack errors have crushed them this year. While Demps arrival was exciting, the hitting% is simply not there. Jurnee is going to be phenominal and has ridiculous power but she needs consistent setting to be effective. Being only a Freshman her hitting errors will be there and she certainly will keep swinging but they need to distribute the ball better so blockers can't camp out on the pins. In order to open up the offense, the ball control needs to be there. They have become one dimensional and easy to figure out and defend. I have faith in Coach Johnson to make some adjustments for the future.

The body language doctor would like to schedule a session with the LSU team. After A&M took the third, heads dropped, coaches frowned and gesticulated, and all the oxygen left the building.

Sadly, this is looking like Flory 2.0 as I thought but hoped wouldn’t be case. Wish Woodward would have done a real search instead of following ex coach recommendation!

When Fran does broadcasts, she makes it sound like she's still very involved. Agreed! Maybe her leaving for Vegas will be good thing! Just felt there was no real hiring process for Frans replacement; Woodward just hired who Fran wanted as a parting gift for “resigning”. Both Johnson and Wilson did not have much success in their head coaching stints. My only hope was Johnson learned some things from Elliott. Problem is she doesn’t have the talent to have OH’s hit 6 ro and not focusing much on quality libero/defense like Texas. Even Elliott finally figured out a strong libero presence is a must. Hope she figures it out but not super enthusiastic about it so far!

Unless people want to provide more details on why LSU’s future is so grim, I don’t see a reason why Johnson won’t be successful. Growing pains are natural and I have confidence they will find/develop athletes with ball control. But who knows!

I support Coach Johnson. But, like many programs, the defense seems to be taken for granted. Bohnet and Larkin provided much defense last year that seems to be quite lacking this year. If you look at the digs from last year, Larkin paced with like 5 digs/set, and Bohnet ALSO paced with 3 digs/set (as a DS, she only played for half the set, so pretty phenomenal.) When the team lacks blocking (as evidenced by the numbers; I believe they were one of the lowest blocking teams in the SEC last year), it significantly helps to have a defensive specialist and libero who can read the OH and setter dumps. Bohnet and Larkin provided that last year and did an excellent job. IF you watched the games from last year, these two, on many occasions, almost ran into each other trying to get to the ball after reading the opposing teams' hits and setter dumps. Bohnet also helped shore up the right side hitter/setter. While Anderson is good, if I recall correctly, she was not trained as a libero, but an OH. (But everyone thinks you can magically turn OHs and other players into liberos and defensive specialists. /sarcasm) Waak has actually been doing a good job at setting. Some of the blame needs to be placed on the hitters (unforced errors), but no one likes to do that; it's always the passing and the setting's fault. /sarcasm No offense to Demps, but Echter, in the last two games, appears to be doing a better job. Vondran also provided many points last year with her joists at the net. If you think about it, Dotson is back, AND Robinson is better than Dotson was last year. I think the major difference is defense. Not only did LSU go to MANY five point sets last year, but they also had many, many long rallies during those sets.

vbshrink I know you are an Arkie fan. While I am fine if Tennessee wins the SEC (because I am tired of seeing UF and KY winning it), I am actually rooting for Arkansas. I LOVE Jill Gill. Being "undersized", she sure does know how to play. I haven't kept up with your setter, libero, DS, middles or the other OHs, but they must be a really good TEAM, as opposed to just singular great players. Good luck in the rest of the season!!!!!

Thanks! It should be very interesting. Arkansas has to prove it can win the tough, important matches.
