usavolleyball.org/story/twelve-girls-u19-players-headed-to-world-champs/USA Volleyball has selected 12 athletes to compete at the FIVB Girls U19 World Championship on August 1-11 in Osijek, Croatia, and Szeged, Hungary. The team has been training at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs since July 22 and will leave for Europe on Saturday. Opposite UCLA commit Abigail Mullen returns from the team that won the 2022 Girls U19 Pan American Cup and qualified for the World Championship. Abigail has not committed yet. Her sister Ashley is the one playing at UCLA this fall

I was about to say.
Bruin fans are gonna collectively have a heart attack if Abigail committed. That would have been HUGE.

Ucla is probably out of running for Abigail Mullen which is why they offered and secured the commitment of Mija B
Does anyone know the current ranking of Mija B and Eliana U?

Mullen is still considering USC, so that could be an interesting sibling rivalry. Mija B isn't on any ranking list, but that's more an indictment on PV and PD. She has enormous upside, which should excite Bruin fans. Her brother is a 6'9 professional basketball player in Italy, so Mija played OPP for Tribe this year, but at NTDP/Ft Lauderdale played mostly OH and looked very good. IMO, her best trait is not her offense, it's her passing.

i'm going to go back and watch the last three games on ESPN+.
The setter situation looks interesting. Mullen started and UCLA lost a close one to LSU rd. 1. Mullen started and UCLA did OK in LSU Rd. 2, but counting points was -10 over two sets. Pak came for set 3 onward and UCLA won two of the three sets to beat LSU, with +7 points diff.
Then Mullen starting again the last three games and Pak not setting at all.
Is Mullen a secure starter and Pak a strong backup at this point?

Park is a Sealy recruit and a senior. She could be the answer this season but if Mullen is not given valuable work this season, next year could be rough. I guess Alfie wants to rough it out and get the growing pains out of the way this season and then build the team with more of his player for next season.

Wow, ya’ll really had NO confidence in this team in June/July!!
They’re proving ya’ll soooo wrong! 7-1 so far. I just watched them put on a blocking/tipping clinic vs Hawaii in Honolulu! The 3 outside hitters are good, like really good!! N’diaye and Olsen might be first team all Pac this year! Dodson is a beast in the middle, and she looks like she toying with others at times!
This could be a very good season for the Bruins!

7-1 is a good start, but this is a pretty weak schedule, and not one true signature win, despite Hawai'i being ranked top 25. The good news is that there are a ton of Fab 50 recruits on this team. They're getting by on physical talent and enthusiasm. The true test will be if Reft can get the passing and setting on track.

I've watched the majority of matches that have been on Youtube and I think I've got a blend of optimism and skepticism. For one, like volleyguy said, this is not an incredibly tough schedule so I think the Bruins are a bit untested heading into Pac-12. I do think they deserve a Top 25 ranking, probably somewhere in the 19-25 spot unless they can start racking up quality wins to start Pac-12.
Things I'm impressed by: -BLOCKING- I can't think of a UCLA team in recent memory that has been so dominant on the block. Definitely exciting to watch this.
-Offensive Distribution- I've always thought of UCLA as a team that relies heavily on OHs to carry the biggest load on offense (think Mac May, Riley Buecheler, Rachel Kidder, Dicey McGraw, etc). To see us start the season seeing more emphasis on middles and RS is impressive. Leverette and Olson have also stepped up, but I think their defense has a ways to go (see below).
-Desire to win- especially compared to last season, it's awesome to see a fight in these Bruins that felt lacking at the end of the Sealy era. Not sure if it's culture shift alone or desire to try new things, but I certainly expected this squad to lose 1-2 more matches in the pre-season.
Things I want to see get better: -Floor defense- yes, we have been spoiled by incredible liberos in UCLA's recent memory (Fleck, Muno, Formico), but I've always thought of UCLA as a team who was good on passing/digging no matter anything else that was going on. The Hawaii match last night featured so few long rallies because neither team had an ability to pick balls up and keep it going. Reft is putting a lot of confidence in Leverette to be a 6-rotation player but our offense was out of system by default last night because serve receive was so shaky.
-Setter placement- yes, this is impacted by the passing, but it felt like the offense over-relies on tipping because hitters are not getting set high enough. Maybe this was the gameplan because of Hawaii's inability to pick up tips, but it felt frustrating to watch.

I think people have been thinking this new team with a new coach would be in shambles. I think that this team may surprise a lot of people this season
