Great game last night. This is the bruin team we have been waiting for. Everything seems to be coming together beating no. 9 Washington State. Per the bracketology thread, UCLA needs to win the four games they should win down the stretch ... Arizona, Udub, Cal and OSU. then win a game in which they are a an underdog -- ASU, WSU, Stanford, or USC.
They accomplished the upset win v. WSU. now they have to not drop against UDub, Cal or OSU. Which has them closing the season 5-3, and probably into the NCAAs. If they should drop one they should win against Udub, Cal or OSU, they would need to beat Stanford or 'SC to make up for that.

Reft needs to recruit better outside hitters. Both Olson and Leverette are hitting below .170 in conference play and this is not going to cut it. They can’t pass well too. I really hope Horne will be the answer next year. Hendrickson looks like someone who just started playing volleyball recently and Umeh probably got the same deal as Onye did at Oregon. I can’t believe Reft is redshirting her this year
Losing Dodson and Ndiaye will be costly for the Bruins next year

I did not watch it, but that is a disastrous performance and a miracle the rest of the team performed to a level that overcame those points given away. The stats sheet implies that the UCLA middles really carried that game. Dodson hit .577 with 5 blocks, while Becker hit .477 with 7 blocks.
Leverette hit poorly, but had 4 aces against 2 errors, which somewhat compensated for that.

Olson's passing was atrocious too. WSU would lollipop short serves to her and she couldn't handle them. I don't know if she can hit on the right side, but I'd move her there next year if there isn't a good RS recruit joining the team in 2024. She has the size to play OPP and that's where you bury bad passers.

Or hide them whenever possible in serve receive as Stanford did with Plummer.
Reft inherited a sparse cupboard, and only made the season workable by saving Dodson from the Portal and picking up Becker. Absent those middles, UCLA is looking at four to six games under .500 for the season, and around 6-14 in the PAC when conference play has completed. There is only so much Ndiaye could have done as the only viable attack.
Interesting to speculate where UCLA would have been had he been able to save Luper as well.

Actually Leverette hit pretty well against WSU, I think she had about 16 kills at .250 including some big OOS swings. She played well against UW today and is definitely improving. Meanwhile the self proclaimed number 1 recruit in the nation continues her poor hitting and passing forms

But today, she took Becker's place alongside Dodson to anchor the offense. Fun match to watch.
Assuming they make the NCAAs, two offensive threats will not cut it past rd. of 32. They will always have Dodson, but they will also need 2 of the 3 (Leverette, Becker and Ndiaye) to be on. Of late it seems just one of those three has been a threat in any given match.

Looking in retrospect --
Pak's first game as full time setter was v. Cal on Oct. 13. Including that game, UCLA is 7-3 from that moment forward.

Her play over the past 10 games makes you wonder why Sealy wanted a one year from KState and then another from GTech . . . Maybe Alfee knows how to coach setters. She’s doing more with less.

makes you wonder why Sealy ...setters. Aside from lack of leadership effectiveness, his number one weakness was an inability to coach up setters. Ironic, isn't it?

yee haw!!
PS that is the first Bruin this entire year to earn PAC weekly honors.
It does, however, reinforce my position that Middle is seen more as a Defensive position than an Offensive one. Her offense this week was more impactful than her defense, and yet she gets the defensive award.

Aw this makes me really happy to see— Anna has been pushing hard this entire season and she’s finally getting the credit due. In the write up, it also noted she’s 3rd in the league in hitting efficiency and blocks. BALLER
