OK, done with other UCLA threads. Will stay here now. I'm guessing UCLA budgeted about $165k for this hire. This is a great hire for that type of budget. And given the final candidate's relatively sparse CV, I'm also guessing they closed this deal at under $150k. You would be VERY wrong

There’s going to be A LOT of piecing together for this team. Only one returning full time starter (Ndiaye) but I’m sure Grayce Olson grabs one of the Outside Hitter spots, maybe Leverette will be able to earn a spot too, 2 out that trio of A5 pins were impact players in their freshman seasons so I’m sure she’s capable.
Maybe Tufono and Dueck will be capable enough to hold down the Setter and Libero spots respectively but wouldn’t be surprised if transfers are brought it to sure up both of those positions.
I believe they have an incoming freshman middle but it’s rare to get in a freshman Middle that’s ready to play that position at a high level on Day 1 so that’s probably going to be the main focus for Reft when he hits the portal.
I’m sure there’s going to be at least one big arm Pin in the portal that’s going to be able to put the program on her back but that remains to be seen who.
No idea what the scholarship count is currently but I’m sure there’s quite a bit to work with.

Olson and Leverette both played well when they played this year, and Tufono is a great defender and server. They will need to run a 6-2 with her though, as she's not tall enough for front row play. I would agree. They will likely need at least one pin if not two (gotta account for possible injuries), one middle likely, and a strong DS/libero option. New coach as some recruiting to do!

Who are the biggest gets in the portal right now? Podraza, Parra, and Beason? General Sentiments seem to be: - Littles: Murr, Gomillion?
- MBs: McGhee, Robinson
- Pins: Beason, Parra, Thomas-Ailara, Wenaas
- Setters: Podraza

Bruins need to go after May Pertofsky, a LA native in the portal, especially if they're going to end up running a 6-2.

For OH, Olson and Leverette can play. They just need more experience. Would be nice to add an experienced 6 rotation OH to the mix for competition and depth. For MB, Bruins are on Dodson watch. If no Dodson and only Alupei (injured) and Briscoe, need at least 2 more experienced MBs. Could need 3. Needed 5 this year to get through the season. For S, I think Mullen is supposed to enrolling early. She is apparently a highly ranked 5 ft 11 lefty setter. Tufono is good and has a year of experience. Should be a good competition. For L/DS, not sure about Dueck or McCarthy. Dueck was better earlier in the year. McCarthy later (replaced Dueck v I think one of the Arizonas and Stanford and passed well). Then UCLA wisely went 6-2 and didn’t need either of them. Alfee can coach L’s. They are both good young defenders who should improve under him. Hopefully, one will take game to next level. Not sure on scholarship count. Best guess. If Dodson stays I think Alfee has two open. If only 2, I think he has to look at an experienced MB and an experienced OH before an experienced S and an experienced L. If Dodson leaves, I think has 3, but then I think he needs 2 experienced MBs and an experienced OH. Barring any more changes, looks to me likely that Bruins could have a young S or L in the Fall. Hope Dodson stays and announces she will sooner rather than later. Her staying should make it easier for Alfee to recruit a top transfer or two.

So maybe I’m just being dumb.
But if Reft can bring in some of that Southern California Filipino volleyball fanbase to home games…attendance/environment could eventually be pretty lit.

That would help. It will also help if the team isn't finishing in the middle of the Pac12, and that the team plays with a fighting spirit that has been lacking since 2013, with the exception of Keller's year where they fought hard every game.

That’s a solid number to get a strong roster of transfers in for the coming year.
