Preview:
After a puzzling, underachieving 2022 and the first leadership change in 24 years, the 2023 Wolverines will have a very different look both on the court and on the bench. The team loses three starters (and its top 3 scorers) to graduation and with critical positions in need of upgrades, this looks to be a season of transition. With the disappointing transfer of Jess Mruzik, there should be at least one available scholarship in play to shop for a good fit off of the transfer portal or to a late freshman recruit (Update: welcome Lydia Johnson!). Burke and Vaulet are promising additions to the team, but with Blue's best player off to Happy Valley there is desperate need of help at OH. Can new HC Erin Virtue entice a big name to transfer? Stay tuned.
Defensively, Michigan is solid at MB with Boney and Nyambio; Grant returns for her senior season as one of the best libs in the B1G. Cuchran will likely see more play time at DS however the team could use an upgrade in that spot as well. On offense, much depends on how the setter position pans out and whether or not there is any help coming at OH. Vaulet made a splash at the Pan Am Cup playing for Argentina and it will be interesting to see how her game translates to the NCAA.
Questions:
- Are the Rosen's returning? All recent indications point to yes. The program scheduled its annual volleyball banquet for January and Mark Rosen, who took a leave of absence in November, participated in the last team meeting of the season earlier this month. There hasn't been any formal announcement, but for now it looks like the coaching staff will remain in place. Answer: Nope.
- Can Morgan Burke win the starting setter position? Scottee Johnson will be a senior, but the inconsistent 6-2 play really damaged the team's chances in the second half of last season.
- Who will fill the holes at OH? Allison Jacobs is out and there is little remaining B1G experience on the roster other than Kendall Murray. Vaulet, Simmons, and McBurrows will all get a chance but this will be the first time in a decade that Blue doesn't have an AA arm on the left side.
- Any additional support in the works from the Athletic program? Cliff Keen arena is an embarrassment and if a new facility is not in the cards, the very least that the administration can figure out is how to replicate what Michigan State did for their program and move all home games into Crisler. Michigan can match just about any school in the country with its training facilities, support programs, campus setting and academic excellence. But its a huge handicap when you walk a volleyball recruit into the aged, former swimming pool that serves as the primary practice gym and the setting for most of its home matches.
