Michigan has the budget and the brand to lure away a big time coach and upgrade their arena, but they won't. They'll hire a regional mid-major coach or grab a hot assistant. Kelli Miller Phillips Jaylen Reyes Brittany Dildine Anders Nelson Dan Meske? (He's an Ohio State grad so that would be extra spicy) I’d love to see another woman head coach in the Big 10! EDIT; We need to have another woman head coach in the conference.

I said this in the Mark Rosen Out at Michigan thread, but: The AD got there in January 2016. That fall, Michigan was the #12 seed in the tourney and made the S16. In 2017, they dropped some matches they shouldn't have but upset #8 MSU, #15 Purdue, and #16 Purdue in the last two weeks of the regular season. 2018 saw them upsetting #11 Pitt in the R32 and losing a S16 match to #5 Texas (sets 2 and 3 were 29-27, 27-29). The AD had to give the Rosens an extention. In the time of the extension (2019-2022), the AD has had to deal with ALL the Big 3s--had to hire a MBB coach in 2019 (after a successful 12-year Beilein left for the NBA), had to deal with backlash about Football's HC Harbaugh and restructured his contract in 2022, and hired a Baseball coach in 2022. I'm sure most ADs would consider those to be more pressing issues than buying out a coach of an Olympic Sports (even though VB in the B1G often gets more attention and resources than the others), particulary when 2019 was a 21 win season and another R32 tournament finish and 2020 when they didn't contest almost as many matches as they did and 8 of their 9 losses were vs #11 Purdue, @ #9 Ohio State, vs #5 Nebraska, and @ #1 Wisconsin. Sure Keen needs a facelift (or maybe facial reconstructive surgery...) but I don't think it's fair to say that Michigan doesn't care about volleyball at this juncture. Who they hire/what they pay in salary this time around might be grounds for that assumtion, but time will tell. I also too an in depth look at their Athletic Department as a whole and besides Men's Lacrosse, Men's Track & Field, and Women's Basketball ('22 E8), all the programs (88%) have won a Conference regular season and/or tourney title since this AD arrived. That's insane honestly. They are one of the top 5 wealthiest Athletic Departments in the country, with an increased conference pay out on the way, and two historically good volleyball teams coming onto the schedule in 2024. I'm not sure why they'd decide that volleyball was the place that was acceptable for average, even if it's among, if not thee toughest B1G title to win. But again, time will tell here. I really hope Michigan hits a home run with this. There's no reason not to.
I am sometimes skeptical about whether schools with "rich" athletic departments will truly spread the wealth. Everyone talks about increased media money and other riches as if it's a foregone conclusion that everyone benefits to the same level, but departments find ways to spend money and it wouldn't surprise me at all if a, IMO, disproportionate share of money goes to football and athletic admin. Obviously all the other sports still get money, but will they see significant increases in expenditures, salaries, etc., and will salaries in other sports stay competitive to the marketplace.
From all the info you've shared, it seems like there's a good chance that Michigan will do right by VB. I hope so.
Funny thing is, I'm not a Wolverine, just decided to take an interest in this opening (maybe partly because it's the only thing much of note going on this week). But as I continue.. Football had a $168 million training facility upgrade in 2019 and also has a $41 million upgrade project for the football stadium that is underway for next fall. The most recent one, was totally privately funded though. They also constructed a $100 million Athletic Campus in 2018 that included a new indoor and outdoor track, a lacrosse stadium, and new indoor rowing facilities. A Field Hockey complex came a few years prior--2014. The Crisler Center hasn't seen an upgrade since 2013, but that was a major one. I'm sure I'm being overly hopeful, but I think the resources are there if they choose to use them. Edit: Continuing to be (maybe too) optimistic, but I just Google Map searched Keen arena--which is also home to the 2022 B1G Champs and 2022 National 3rd Place Men's Gym team, the '21 & '22 B1G Champs and 2021 National Champs Women's Gym team, and the 2022 B1G Champs and National Runner Up Wrestling team. At first glance, it's a little limited in expansion space around the arena (1,800 capacity). However, there is a track right behind it that is no longer a competition space (as of 2018), so it can probably be removed. If you don't want to reno Cliff Keen, there's probably room to just build a new multipurpose arena where the old track was. I'd think Gym/Gym/Wrestling probably want and deserve a better space too and those sports don't have schedule conflicts like you'd see by moving volleyball into Crisler.

That's Ferry Field which had quite a bit of historical value. Jesse Owen's set multiple world records there is just one example. It's also used by intramurals I believe and is only track available to students. The new one is not readily available. I believe they tried to do away with it once already for lore parking and it was met with a huge resistance. They have places to build I think but I'd be surprised if that's the spot.

One of the original gates to Ferry Field is located off of State St. between Cliff Keen and the Hartwig Building, its one of my favorite hidden spots on campus. Ferry Field was the home to Michigan football before Michigan Stadium was built. And yes, that track was the site of what has been called the greatest 45 minutes in sports history, where Jesse Owens set 4 world records at the 1935 Big Ten Track and Field Championships. There is a small, easily overlooked monument and plaque at the southeast corner of the track that I often stop at on my way into a volleyball match. So incredible was that performance, there is a monument dedicated to a Buckeye on Michigan's campus. When Stephen Ross donated $100 million for the south athletic performance center, Michigan began a supplementary capital improvement plan that originally included a new indoor facility for volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling. It's proposed location was the site of what is currently the indoor training facility just beyond the right field wall of Ray Fisher Stadium. Sadly, the volleyball facility plans were scrapped as costs rose on the south campus project. I would assume that location though would still be preferred for a future facility. When the University proposed to convert Ferry Field into a parking lot, there was an immediate outcry from both students and residents. It's a heavily used recreational resource and open space and Michigan wisely scrapped those plans. But the hope for a new volleyball facility remains!

Just a few notes: The women's gymnastics program does not have any connection with Cliff Keen Arena. It is an instance that I will give the athletic department credit: they saw the growth in attendance at those events and moved them to Crisler. They typically have a higher draw (albeit less events) than women's hoops. Men's gym trains somewhere else but they draw pretty small crowds to Keen when they're home. With the amount of universities cutting men's gymnastics (I think there are 16 or 17 left in the nation), I just hope they can hang on as a program. Wrestling gets GREAT crowds in Keen (typically) and when they move matches to Crisler they're pretty well attended too. Obviously the conflict of MBB/WBB/WGYM make it difficult for them to get in there very often. As for Ferry Field: besides the historical significance and the recreational aspect of it, it serves as a tailgate space for football as well. All of that said - The facility situation is not a secret. It makes me dubious whether top B1G assistants like Reyes and Dildine would have serious interest in the position. Unless it is in writing that something is going to change. We've been looking forward to a new VB facility since the Final Four. Pretty sure every recruiting class since Abby Cole was sold a new facility as part of the recruiting pitch.

Someone on a different forum mentioned Lloy Ball. Hadn't head that name in a while. I don't think he's coached in college though, even if he has a lot of experience training top juniors.

J Reyes C George M Alvey A Knipe K Gandara C Johnson Lynch A Mansfield - Reyes has been discussed.
- George seems to be happily retired.
- If Alvey is being considered, I'd think Williamson at South Dakota should be too.
- Knipe is a SoCal native so wouldn't the UCLA job have made more sense? Also, while Michigan is certainly not Northwestern, see Shane Davis as a cautionary tale for being a Men's National Championship coach trying to be successful in the B1G.
- Gandara is from Puerto Rico and probaly enjoys the Miami sunshine.
- CJL hasn't seen an Elite 8 since 2011, though I suppose there's certainly an argument to be made that recruiting to Ann Arbor is easier than recruiting to Ames.
- Mansfield seems to be the fan favorite for the Huskies to replace Cook at Washington.

wrong Mansfield, that’s Jason at Washington. A Mansfield suggests Aaron @ LMU

J Reyes C George M Alvey A Knipe K Gandara C Johnson Lynch A Mansfield Cathy George? Why would Michigan hire the coach who “retired” from the in state rival and it was in worse shape than Michigan at the end? (Last 4 years of her tenure 9,9, 12, 11 in B1G)

I believe this would be the perfect opportunity for Kelli Miller Philips if she wanted to move up. From the Shondell/Muncie tree (likes of Skinner, Sheffield), played in the B1G and beat Michigan in the NCAaA tournament last season.
