I am fully sounding the alarm on Holdem though. I don’t know if it’s injury, lack of setter connection with Bishop, personal struggles of being so far away from home, being schemed out of games now that she has film or what. Maybe it’s somehow a combo of everything or nothing at all. But she looks completely checked out and this team cannot win games where she goes 3/6/25 and your setter matches your offensive output in multiple games in a row. She’s not even taking full swings they’re all just chops and long half speed shots. Maybe it’s just a confidence thing after losing so many games but at this point we’ve gotta try someone else up front.

I thought I saw Holdem post a TikTok back in August saying she was recovering from a concussion?
Anyways, things not looking good for this team which is very unfortunate. I’m afraid we’re gonna see a few players hit the portal, particularly Berger and even karolina since she hasn’t gotten as much playing time this year. Hell, there’s even a chance that holdem goes in the portal too but I really hope not.

Yeah I’d say that’s about where I am as well. If no portal attrition happens you should have Berger, Kash, Preston, Holdem, Kulig, Waye, Foley, Bolton, Clayton and MAYBE Courtley if she takes the medical red shirt? Losing Iosia sucks but Bolton, Foley and Berger all have their redshirts for this year burned. Let’s let them get some run and punt on this season. With all that in mind, I think a far more likely scenario is that Berger fights the NCAA for a redshirt after only playing one set and hits the portal to go G5. This staff has not shown any confidence in her this year and with them burning the redshirt both seasons, they’ve done no favors to her that might indicate she’s part of their plans long term. I’m almost positive they will hit the portal like they did for Nunez and see if we can bridge the gap to ‘26 for McCarty. Losing Iosia sucks but this team returns a lot of production next year. Is there a chance that either Bishop or Muisenga come back for a 5th year? Do they even have that option or have they burned their 4 years? I don't follow on what "they did for Nunez". Can you give a run down on the incoming options for setter? If Berger leaves that would be a huge blow......then isn't the only option the incoming freshman setter from New Zealand? Thanks for clarifying Both were 2021 players so they aren't eligible for the Covid year extension. Bishop has played all 4 years so she would be gone, Rachel did not play her first year at PSU but I don't remember if redshirts get automatically applied or not if you don't play. So I think it's 50/50 on whether she has eligibility next year. That being said, I think this program needs to move on next season. This year was pretty wide open for the setting position once Courtley went down and the 6-2 was in jeopardy. If you can't win that this year being 6'1, you're pretty cooked. As for our future options, we have a few if all things play out with no portal/decommits/etc and Musinega didnt get a redshirt. Cam Berger: would be a true junior in 2025. (I think the likelihood she portals increased. Not sure this staff is sold on her anymore) Kalea Norton: would be a true freshman in 2025. She's the setter Holdem had in New Zealand. I've seen zero film from her other than some random IG videos she was in with Taylah. She might be 5'10" on a good day unless she's hit some massive growth spurt recently....would need to be in the 6-2 system and I think that's what Leah envisioned. For '26, things get super interesting. Jillian McCarty is the setter for this class and after watching some of her film, there's plenty of things to be REALLY excited about here. 6'1 lefty with great touch, a huge block, and can consistently call her own number offensively. 5/6 of the players on her team are already committed to P4 Division 1 programs and it allows her to run an offense that will more accurately reflect the tempo, set types and execution of college rather than the HS level. Simply put, this is a girl you try and bridge the gap for in your program so that she can walk in day 1 and potentially win a job as a freshman cause I think she will be ready. But as I said earlier, I'd like the staff to dip into the portal and see if we can get an experienced setter to add to this '25 team that returns 100% of its blocking and offensive production. We have 3 libero/ds options plus Olivia Durst who will be pushing hard for the job even as a true freshman to replace Iosia. If all you have to do is get a setter and maybe an arm in the portal, this team could have a great '25 and then hand the keys to McCarty for a youth movement in '26.

OSU takes set 3 25-22. I understand this coaching staff gets paid to make rotations but I truly do not understand what data is pointing them to continue pushing the 6-2 at some of these junctions. How can you continue to watch this team rally into good runs with the 5-1 rotation and think oh you know what? Let’s make my front row a combo of Holdem Waye and Moore? There just isn’t enough firepower on this team to have Preston and Kash off the floor both at the same time. It just does not track at all. Many of the coaching decisions this season have been baffling. I oscillate between giving grace and asking what the f*ck are we doing here. To some extent I think the staff deserves both. But I also think coaching staffs can only do so much. How is a coaching staff supposed to scheme around your starting opposite blowing her knee out in the 4th game, your OH1 not being able to pass or hit above .100 in a P4 game, your returning OH2 seemingly losing the entirety of her confidence midway through the year and dealing with nagging lower body situations, and your Opp2 in a 6-2 having to get moved to OH1 mid season and not being able to pass? If Taylah Holdem hits .175 like she did last year this staff is a genius after moving Kash to the opposite. If Kash picks up the passing and hits .225 from the left side so Taylah can only play back row this staff is a genius. The 6-2 stuff flip flopping is frankly unacceptable but other than that the staff has put this team in good places while also giving players a long leash so that they don't lose their entire confidence. I really don't know what more the staff should be expected to do....

Well another loss for this team against a bottom of the Big 10 team - Maryland. Absolutely brutal.

That would certainly explain the drop in performance and I truly hope she can fully recover. Its worrisome that there has not been improvement on the court as the season has worn on.

Gonna watch the full game to see what went wrong where.
But looking at the box score I think we need to start asking some questions about whether this staff knows what it’s doing. I know the big ten got harder but this team won 9 games with two true freshman.
There’s zero world where we should be on pace to match our 2022 win total. I know coaching changes are a death sentence for a program for a few years but this staff’s seat should be SCORCHING coming into next year.

I'd be more inclined to say it was concussion related at this point if she was the only player struggling. But essentially everyone on this team has regressed outside Kulig and Iosia. This team won 9 conference games with Karolina Stanizewska and Grace Kelly splitting OH2 reps last year. lol

She struggled to better out of system balls so a hitter can get a swing. Her in-system set location looked all over the place. Her hitters have to adjust to many of them. She really had a tough time on her height of set to the middles. Maybe thats why Muisenga came in for a spell. I would also say that the hitters really struggled tooling the block (hitting outside arms/hands of the outside or inside blockers and hitting high hands). With the slow tempo of sets, they were always hitting into 2 blockers.

Maybe because it was the 6-2 blockers were more honest because there's 3 hitters. But the 5-1 is almost universally run as an offense. But again this team won 9 games last year with 3 players that have rode the bench the entire season. This team has more talent than last year....winning 1 conference game with maybe 2 more winnable games is unacceptable.

My point is not to abandon Bishop, I don't think you do that to any player. There has been a consistent tinkering of the lineup with the hitters, backrow, etc, depending on the on-court performance.....which is what great coaches do, to find what works. I just think that same approach should be applied to the setter position. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn't.

The constant flip flopping between the 5-1 and 6-2 is starting to drive me up a f*cking wall. There is like zero chemistry with Musienga what are we doing

When is ichigan going to get serious about their volleyball broadcast? No scoreboard, no replays, I know high school broadcasts with better production value.

Rutgers takes set 2. Okur made an appearance at middle and this just honestly feels like we’re just getting people reps that haven’t played all year so they can be a part of a competitive game.
Totally get it from a coach point of view, but this sh*t is atrocious as a fan. Rutgers is absolutely dogsh*t and we’re playing down heavily. It’s truly hard to watch

Sparty takes set 3 in what might actually be the ugliest set of P4 volleyball I’ve ever watched.
I don’t want to insult anyone personally, but for the love of the game Rachel should not be setting another ball the rest of the season. This is atrocious. The sets are not even close.
I love this program so much, but watching this all unfold and seeing Cam Berger sit the bench is absolutely INFURIATING. She’s already played two sets this year…..so no redshirt. It is absolutely insulting to the game I love to see a girls redshirt burned and then sit her in a season where the setting is clearly one of the worst aspects of the team. I can’t take it anymore

MSU takes set 4 25-9 and the match 3-1. Good to be back in the win column today and I know the girls have to be happy about it.
But yeah….this game gave me nothing to be confident about going forward as a team. The setting was atrocious from Musienga….nearly getting doubled up in assists by Bishop.
Kash and Preston had 17 kills a piece on solid efficiency. Holdem just….cant get it going. 7 kills on .027 against Rutgers is just not enough to justify you being out there. Is Karolina or Grak THAT bad?
I know the competition wasn’t good and they played down most of the way. But I leave this game deeply uncomfortable with the way we played. This should not make anyone feel good.
