With additions to the league, how long before Sparty is in the NCAA tournament? My impression is that the task just gets a lot more difficult. Nine or ten teams out of 18. With Leah’s leadership it will be sooner rather than later. (not an easy task though) Where do you rank Leah Johnson amongst the 18 Big Ten head coaches? Apparently ahead of most…

Apparently ahead of most… I think she is a perfect fit for Michigan State. The B1G is a tough league obviously, being a great coach is one thing, having the AD and school supporting the program and getting the players is also another thing. Leah has proven she can do more with less. What she did at Illinois State was amazing. How she finished with what she started with at MSU over the past two season has been tremendous. People want to play for her. I would rank her in the top 6-7 coaches easily.

It is really hard to evaluate with the culture of college sports these days. I think from a record perspective, I would say she did a good job last year but also the big ten was the weakest it has been in a long time. I think this upcoming year is huge for her and her staff. Do they make it in top half or take a step back. If I had to guess they will finish bottom third in the Big Ten this coming season.

I believe they had 6 or 7 players on the roster that first spring, several that ended up transferring to much smaller programs. Michigan State does not have crazy NIL support for VB like other teams in the conference, but they do have great support from the admin allowing the team to move out of Jenison to Breslin.

Solid start. Still the jury is out on which direction the program will go after just 2 seasons. Year 3 and 4 will give a much better sample size.

Did she do that to teams in her previous conference? No? Tell us you weren't paying attention without telling us you weren't paying attention Previous coach won 60% of her matches. Johnson won 65%. 17-15 in last season at Illinois State How does that translate to crushing the Big 10 competition? I don't know Johson. My issue is with a silly assertion that isn't really based on evidence.

I don’t see Johnson or the current composition of her roster as being even near the top ten in the B1G. She’s located in a talent rich state, but can’t sign any of the best players. She’s really gonna have to up her game to keep up with the teams currently in the conference, and those about to enter. Two years in an she has 13-27 conference record and the nonConference scheduling is abysmal. She’s clearly a good coach-just based on what she did at Illinois State-but in this conference, the coaches are all better than just “good”, so she is in much deeper water than she was at Illinois State and I am not sure the volleyball infrastructure at MSU will attract the players she needs to be much better than they are now. I’ve listened to her talk and talked to people on the staff, and I’m just not sure that they have or what is being done is good enough to make the gains that have to be made to be competitive … but hey, maybe I’m wrong and they’ll win the conference next fall. Sorry 🏐 Just a rough list of the top coaches in the B1G… 1) Cook 2) Sheffield 3) Shondell 4) Flynn Oldenburg 5) Ulmer 6) Tamas 7) Cook 8) Schumacher-Cawley 9) Keller 10) Reft
