Another year, another disappointing season. The Cats ended on a high note with two sweeps at home, including a pretty dominant performance vs. Illinois. Funny, 9-11 in B1G used to be almost a shoe in for the postseason, but bad losses took them out of the running early.
Looking ahead to 2024, Davis has a very thin roster. Excited for Noordemeer to take the setting reigns, and Hernandez is fun to watch. They’ll have a strong defensive trio returning in Stinson, Wright and Navarrete, but as of now Davis has one MB on the roster in a springy Hill, unless Dodson comes back for a 5th. With little known about the incoming ‘24 class, Davis — if he’s not fired — will need to try and find some MB depth and a Sangiacomo replacement (who, despite inútiles, stepped in well for the departed TTA, and was arguably more consistent).

This is a prime example of the risky slippery slope that going heavy into the portal causes. I think Davis did a decent job leveling up his team this year using it, but is now seeing the downside in not recruiting organically. They will be exposed to the remains of the talent pool in what will be the portal starting next week. I hopes they can fill a ton of gaps left from lasts years portal dive. They need quite a bit including a 3rd setter. As they learned the hard way two years ago when both setters went down.

Whoa. Yeah, I'd think Northwestern would be a good place to coach. Welsh-Ryan is really nice (though the jumbotron is way too low for volleyball).

And people have been saying this the last three hires. Is it?

And people have been saying this the last three hires. Is it? I still maintain that the super-high academic places (ex-Stanford) all struggle with the "She IS here to play school" problem, and there have even been Stanford squads that I think fell victim to that.

After essentially being banned from B1G media day, it seemed inevitable that Davis would be shown the door. If Northwestern had pulled the trigger much earlier, I wonder if Erin Virtue could/would have been in that mix. I sort of feel she would have been a good fit.

Good call on Virtue but that ship has sailed. I would love to see someone with some midwest connections and recruiting chops. Someone who could bring in a fresh face as an Asst Coach that could make a splash recruiting wise. Similar to what Nebraska is doing with Jordan Larson (but obviously not to that scale). Chicago has a wealth of recent college popular VB alumn with a pretty tight network that could make a dent in mediocrity at NW if done right.

I'm old enough to remember when Northwestern made several NCAA tournaments under the previous coach.

This shocks me given Davis’s success this year and solid 25 recruiting class. Any thoughts on if those players will stay with NU?

I'm old enough to remember when Northwestern made several NCAA tournaments under the previous coach. But none in his final five seasons there. And they were toward the bottom of the conference for those final years. But then they hired someone worse. (Even if Davis isn’t as verbally abusive to the refs as Keylor was while at NU.)
