1st Alliance is one of my favorite 17s teams. Really great in all positions. Also, side note, must be nice to be in a tournament before nationals. With nationals getting pushed later and later, we need to have something in May or June. Honestly. Although the pool and BBQ aren’t so bad today either.

I don't think nationals has been getting later and later....it has been around July 4 for 15 years I've been going to nationals.

Word on the street is they will be starting later next year, not starting until after July 4th. It’s a long time to go without playing a tournament if you don’t play in May or June.

Yep, next year is going to be really late finish for the older teams. The youngsters get to go to Dallas in June, while the older kids get stuck in Vegas until July 11th. JULY 11TH!! Anyway…. Summerfest in Columbus the first weekend in June is an excellent tournament. If your club or team can make it work logistically to get to Columbus for a two day tournament, I highly recommend it.

I’m definitely going to give that feedback to our club at the end of the season that it would be good to have at least one tournament in May/June.

Will coaches still be at GJNC recruiting or will they leave for their camps? Will some of the kids have to choose between playing with their teams at GJNC or going to a college camp? I’m sure it won’t be the end of the world, but that schedule is going to put a lot of people in some unfortunate situations. Another thing to consider… will there be any clubs that are primarily USAV make the decision to just play JVA and AAU next season rather than deal with the potential headaches?

One other dynamic that I've seen a bit on North Texas is younger players (16s, 17s) who's intent is to start playing 18s multiple years. They don't care if they are on a lower level team (which they won't be just from attrition at the 18s age group) but the idea of finishing in April is starting to win out. It already happened some here this current season and they did not feel it affected their recruiting at all going into June 15. I have heard that there are some really high profile players that have been playing up that will also go ahead and still play 18s in their prime recruiting years because of the abbreviated schedule. They are big enough names that coaches will go to those 18s tournaments to watch. If enough kids start doing this and the college coaches start shifting, will it influence the season to possibly get shorter/more efficient. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably encourage my daughter to take this route. A couple of months off to get your body right, focus on school and then hit college camps and tryouts without USAV hanging over your head sounds really great. You could make the decision if you want to go to AAU but then its up to you and how you want to handle your time. Curious to see if the trend continues to grow.

Honestly, that’s an excellent idea, playing up on 18s. I know a few players that did that and it didn’t affect their recruiting at all. I do think there needs to be a way to shorten the season but I also don’t have all the answers on how exactly to do that.

More than a few have done this in Florida, Tennessee and Georgia I know for sure. I have noticed it has been a trend for the past couple years. Not a ton of players but more than a handful for sure.

Or, I would love to see USA take the initiative and jump in front of AAUs if they can... Too much is going on in July for all of these athletes across the country, it allows for no breaks. Very least they could do imo... Or, have ALL ages in the GJNC happen at the same time, end of April.

So you eliminate the Reno Far Western Qualifer and end mid April so that you can add at larges and then they have one week to prep for national tourney ? I am all for shortened season but clubs dont want that. They need revenue for 12 months and players and parents will do it to be on the best clubs Memorial Day weekend would be ok if you arent worried about graduations but i know that is finals time here in Texas for most school districts. June is fine. We only what 10/15% of the overall USAV teams play in a national tourney for USAV or AAU ??

Will more clubs go to both AAUs and USAV if their dates are further apart? There are still clubs that go to both, but that has to be a grind considering how close they are.

At Summerfest this weekend, NKYVC went 0-3 on Day 1 in Power Pool A, Then they went 4-0 on Sunday to win Gold in 17 Open. Teenagers, man. They like to keep things interesting!

Interesting that NKYVC 17s coach was not at SummerFest and not listed on the AES roster. Does anyone know if he is finishing the season or moved on?
Also might be a factor in the Saturday performance if that was the first day of competition with new leadership. They are a very talented group.
