…And was awarded best OH at the PanAm Cup so we’re back to not putting so much weight one meaningless “scrimmage” which is what it is. An age group PanAm Cup Brazil isn't playing in isn't much more to write home about. And didn't she have like 2 kills a set for that one? Also, I don't think Chicoine/Hudson/Schemerhorn as a passing trio is going to hold up well enough for them to run offense through Renner.

There are three primary concerns I have for the Boilermakers in 2023. 1. Development of a second middle. 2. Development of an opposite that can score and be a legit blocking presence 3. Building confidence in the setting position. I do not have passing even as a concern. I am so thrilled that I likely will not have to look at another 2 man serve receive for the next three years that I can barely withhold my joy. I actually think it will take a big load off of whoever is setter and make number 3 possible.

Good points and I laughed as well at the 2 man reference.

I would prefer to see the photos of the returning g players opposed to those who are not playing. Still, a nice layout to work with. Thanks BG!

Will definitely have to catch a spring match. I am always excited about this team. August cannot come soon enough.

I’ll let y’all know if there is replay later. I watched some of it. I had practice and missed a lot of it. From what I saw, Purdue really controlled this match (unlike last year) with ample opportunity to unload the bench. Passing looked great. Renner appears to be locating a more consistent ball (location and tempo). Carr had some really nice moments.

I’m by no means an expert or anything like that, but I did watch the match against Ball State and here are the lineups, sub, scores, and some of my biased thoughts and opinions:
Set 1 Lineup: Myers Colvin Chicoine Hudson Renner Wollard Schermerhorn (L)
Yim came in and set towards the end of the set and did well. However, she also came in during other sets, but seemed to struggle in those. Williams served for Chicoine end of set 1.
Set 1 Score —> 25-18
Set 2 Lineup: Colvin Carr Hudson Chicoine Renner Warren Hornung (L)
Brown came in for Warren in the back row. Highlight of the set were Carr’s back to back solo blocks. Kane came in to serve at the end of the set.
Set 2 Score —> 25-16
The set 3 lineup was the same as set 1. Set 3 Score —> 25-17
Set 4 Lineup: Myers Carr Hudson Chicoine Renner Warren Hornung (L)
Didn’t catch the score, but I believe it was 25-15ish?
Random thoughts: • Rastovski did not play as she was in street clothes, I’m not sure if it’s an injury or what’s going on there (didn’t see a boot). • Chicoine’s jumping serving really threw off Ball State. She had at least 7 aces that I counted and caused many overpasses. • Myers speed of the game looks improved and I believe she’s the favorite for the #2 middle spot. However, Carr is a great blocker and had some solid hits tonight. • Hudson and Colvin look even better than last year and I believe they’ll have a solid, consistent group around them this season. • Hornung looked very comfortable as libero, but Schermerhorn played great throughout the match. • With Wollard and Warren playing RS, I would have to pick Wollard solely based on what I saw tonight. Wollard hit very well whenever she played on the other pin, but I believe Hudson and Chicoine have those spots locked down currently.
I’m excited to see how this young team improves from this spring game until their first game this fall. The future is very bright!

After watching last night's match, I am really curious who will redshirt this fall. With Yim removing herself from the portal, that would create 3 setters on the roster. Would Kane redshirt with Schermerhorn, Brown, and Hornung leading the backcourt? Last night, Chicoine and Hudson played all of the way around most of the night so there aren't many substitutions there. With Heaney coming in this summer, does Wollard switch to the outside and Warren compete against Heaney for the starting right pin position?
One thing is for sure, there are going to be many new faces on the court this fall for Purdue.

I'm guessing Shondell will do the same with Hornung and Schermerhorn as he did with Mo and Jena -- alternate the libero jersey, at least for the pre-season, with the other player most likely playing back row for the OPP. Whichever other DS has the best serve could see time if Colvin is having an off-night with her serve. Depending on how Heaney looks, I could see that OPP battle between Wollard, Rastovski, and Warren. Redshirt Heaney unless she's just outplaying everyone. Wollard could be that Chinn-like role where she could be the OPP or be a sub for Chicoine/Hudson if they struggle. I'm just excited for all this promising depth!

Also thanks for the thorough recap boilervball! Really glad to hear Renner is growing and finding better rhythm with her hitters. Interested in seeing how that battle for setter and 2nd middle goes down.

I will be working on Saturday or else I would be watching the team compete. I am glad that it’s streaming on Big Ten plus though. I like hearing the development of the players. HC Shondell spoke about each player on the Dig City podcast, but I am glad that he wasn’t just sugar coating Renner and her progress. Rastovski should be good to go this upcoming season. She is just missing these Spring matches.
