After watching last night's match, I am really curious who will redshirt this fall. With Yim removing herself from the portal, that would create 3 setters on the roster. Would Kane redshirt with Schermerhorn, Brown, and Hornung leading the backcourt? Last night, Chicoine and Hudson played all of the way around most of the night so there aren't many substitutions there. With Heaney coming in this summer, does Wollard switch to the outside and Warren compete against Heaney for the starting right pin position? One thing is for sure, there are going to be many new faces on the court this fall for Purdue. I'm trying to think -- has Purdue ever redshirted a DS/libero?I'm guessing Shondell will do the same with Hornung and Schermerhorn as he did with Mo and Jena -- alternate the libero jersey, at least for the pre-season, with the other player most likely playing back row for the OPP. Whichever other DS has the best serve could see time if Colvin is having an off-night with her serve. Depending on how Heaney looks, I could see that OPP battle between Wollard, Rastovski, and Warren. Redshirt Heaney unless she's just outplaying everyone. Wollard could be that Chinn-like role where she could be the OPP or be a sub for Chicoine/Hudson if they struggle. I'm just excited for all this promising depth! Just bored enough to go through old rosters... Olivia Van Zelst Carissa Damler Ashley Davis Carley Cramer Blair Bashen

With two 6-rotation OHs + Schermerhorn, Hornung, and Brown all improving, I'm confident the back court will be fine. We can have extra time with Kane between transitions.

Boilers up 10-1 in the first set against Northwestern Chicoine has a hammer of a serve my goodness. First serve that aggressive since Annie Drews was trying if I remember correctly.

Chloe is pretty damn good. Expected to see she's so good defensively but her offense (serve/hittings) is fantastic as well.

Purdue won all 4 sets against Northwestern (25-16, 25-16, 25-??, 26-24)
Starters
Set 1 Hudson/Chicoine Colvin/Myers Renner/Wollard (DS: Hornung) Schermerhorn
Set 2 Hudson/Chicoine Colvin/Carr Renner/Warren (DS: Brown) Hornung
Set 3 Hudson/Chicoine Colvin/Myers Renner/Wollard (DS: Brown) Schermerhorn
Set 4 Hudson/Chicoine Colvin/Carr Renner/Warren (DS: Schermerhorn) Hornung
Every player saw time (except Rastovski -- injured), especially in the later half of set 4 where Yim was setter, Myers replaced Colvin, Williams played back row for Warren. Kane came in as a serving sub.
Thoughts by position:
* OH: Hudson/Chicoine were ridiculous offensively. Both hammered the ball. Chicoine is so quick defensively. Passing was good too. Her serve is great, but Northwestern's OHs handled it well. Hudson is coming into her own. Her passing needs work as does her middle back defense, but she really lit it up with her attacking. Purdue lost a huge lead in the 4th and were about to drop the set, but Hudson turned it up with a great OOS swing and then back-to-back aces. Both players bring a lot of emotional fire to the court.
* MB: Colvin is going to be an All American this year. Her blocking, attacking, serving -- all of it. She's just continuously growing. I don't think I saw her hit any slides, but they're working on setting her more on quicks behind the setter. Myers is a WIP. Her blocking's improved. A lot of touches at the net. Offensively, she didn't do anything. Now Carr... she's gonna be a force. Fast, ready, focused. She had a big solo block to end the 4th set. She had some great kills too.
* OPP: ....... this was an area of concern for me. In 4 sets, I think both Wollard and Warren had one kill a piece. Granted, it's not their natural position. They're learning. Wollard's a good blocker. Warren takes some heavy swings. But all the offense came through the left side or middle/BIC. Heaney might not redshirt after all! I think another part of the problem was Renner wasn't really feeding the OPPs in system or much at all.
* Setter: Yes, Renner has improved. I admire how determined she is to make it work with Colvin. Her connection with the outsides was great most of the time. The BIC sets looked really good. She needs to work on setting behind. Whether it's the slide or to the right sides. Yim looked good too. Rough around the edges but she didn't bleed points while out there. She just needs to find a rhythm with the OHs.
* Back court: Wooo! This is going to be a battle. Schermerhorn was Schermerhorn. Solid defense, good passing, fantastic leader. But Hornung? She came to play! Her defense was ridiculous. She was covering everything, digging up hard shots in left back, serving tremendously. She wants that spot. Brown stepped it up too. Lot of good defensive plays in right back. I almost want to sit Hudson in the backrow so we can see all three out there. Almost. Didn't see much of Kane. Williams was all right. She got some time for Hudson in set 3, then Warren in set 4. Northwestern (wisely) served a lot of balls to the OHs so I can't comment much on her passing yet.
All-in-all, this team is growing. Two great OHs who probably will never leave the court. Up-and-coming middles. So much depth in the back court. Passing looks better. Room for improvement in the setting position, but it doesn't look like a detriment like it did last season. If Purdue can get back to the days of having an OPP that contributes big time offensively, they'll be hard to slow down. But they're even younger than last year in terms of age and experience. Northwestern (with only 9 available players) got the best of them at times.
Excited to hear about the Kentucky game!

Bruinsgold this is a wonderful breakdown. I agree with everything here. I am worried about the second middle and opposite position. I don’t think it’s going to cut it. The OH play has been incredible though and so fun to watch.

I am loving seeing the combination of Hudson and Chicoine in the match. She will really help take the load off of Hudson. I am hoping that Carr/Myers continue to make strides in developing more offensively. They are doing well with blocks though.
