I like rotating it a lot more than one static place. It exposes the sport to newer, more causal fans in each new city which is a plus. The die hards can travel to different cities too. There are plenty of bigger arenas in the many different "host" cities. Choose a basketball arena in each place. Like I mentioned for Madison when it would be their turn, they could do it at the Kohl Center (capacity 17,000). All of the Big 10 schools have basketball arenas. Depending upon the demand and the city, you could go bigger. The United Center in Chicago for example. Think big!
Doing it over Thanksgiving is a natural time when people are already off of work so it makes the time commitment to attend easier to manage.
There was some trepidation in basketball when the Big 10 considered a tournament. Now it's a staple and very well attended and popular. I don't see any reason why the same won't be true for volleyball. Need to get it televised.

IMO it's very unlikely they would risk drops in revenue and attendance by rotating through different locations every year. If there ever were a B1G volleyball tournament, I think they would do the safe thing and just schedule it in the suburban Chicago area every year. Yeah, suburban Chicago is a safe bet, but I think they could pull off a rotation between a few of the major cities and college towns in the region (Omaha/Lincoln, Minneapolis, Madison/Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Columbus, etc.). Go really crazy! New York City. Philadelphia. Washington DC/Baltimore. Detroit. Cleveland. Really accentuate that Big 10 footprint!

Have any coaches other than Shondell expressed interest in a tournament? Jim Barnes the Iowa head coach said he would vote “yes” for it. And J Cook has pushed for it for years (or at least a small version of it)

The Big 10 has many top teams. Would you want your top team to have to undergo a grueling tournament packed into a few days, and risk injury just prior to the national tournament?
If it does happen, I would like each school to initially be allotted the same number of tickets.

I don’t think it would be as much of an injury risk if they followed the basketball tournament formula: 5 rounds with the top four seeds getting a double bye. Doing it the week of thanksgiving also means they could have the first three rounds Monday-Wednesday and the semis and finals on Friday and Saturday, making Thanksgiving a rest day.

If the powers that be deem a conference tournament will make money, then it will happen. Unfortunately, that's all that matters these days.

Who on the team is he recruiting? Also, is that allowed? That seems like an impermissible benefit. Sheffield is like a honey badger when it comes to minor recruiting violations.

Don’t use that as your argument Okay, you guys are missing the point. I should have been more specific. You are not only playing the Friday and Saturday before selection Sunday, but there would be additional matches before that with a conference tournament. You no longer have the luxury of resting players (optionally keeping them out of practices to nurse injuries) and instead are pushing them so you can win the conference tournament to retain or improve your NCAA seeding. Sometimes we only learn after the fact, that someone has been hampered most of the season (or maybe just recently), and could use some time off, and instead, you have inserted more matches per a conference tournament just prior to the big dance.

And do it at a location in a large venue. For example, if the tournament was held at the Kohl Center in Madison, I could see it drawing 10,000+ spectators each day. The finals could even be 15,000+. That's a lot of added revenue. Rotate the location each year. Grow the audience. Larger arenas. Think big. It could be VERY successful. I love the idea. Columbus, Madison, Omaha, Minneapolis - those are some pretty good volleyball towns to fill arenas, like you say. It would be fun to try to get into Madison Square Garden, but that's early NBA season, so likely no bueno.
