Never too early to start the thread, right?....
Well, I can have a place to post Spring schedules, too.... and twiddle my thumbs... only six more months...

So I voted for St. Thomas, do I really think they are going to win. No….do I think next year they start to become a legit team in the Summit League. Yes
They have a setter coming in who I believe will be a 4 year starter in Morgan Kealy from River Falls.
They had 2 Minnesota kids transfer in. Ella Voegele who was the Libero at Wayzata and Kaitlynn Peterson from Lakeville North. I believe both could see time next season.
They also have Miriam Unongo who is playing on a good 18-1 select team. I don’t know how much she is playing but I believe she has untapped potential.
They also added a 6-2 MB from Wisconsin. I don’t know much about her.
My point is, they are starting to get better players. I think they will be a successful program because Minnesota is so rich in VB talent and with the Gophers don’t take them all. I’m very excited to see the Tommies next season. With good comes bad….I believe a few of the older players won’t see much time.

Still missing (1):
South Dakota State

Kansas City Oral Roberts
Some of these teams chose not to announce anything until right before the matches. Grrrrr.

Also, while looking for Spring schedule stuff, I came across this (dated March 3rd): ORU Athletics Names Luke Ward as #ORUVB Head Coach
He replaces Frank Craig, who had coached for 3 seasons with an overall record of 30-47. This was announced at the end of November.

Should it be concerning that some of the Summit teams are playing D2 schools (albeit VERY good D2 schools)? In spring is it about upping confidence and implementing systems, or challenging your squad?

In spring is it about upping confidence and implementing systems, or challenging your squad? I'm certainly no expert on this, but I think it's pretty typical. I mean, these are technically exhibition games, right? Another thing to consider is proximity. Not only does the NCAA put a 400-mile cap on Spring opponent distance, but most schools don't want to break the bank in travel costs for an exhibition season (usually poorly attended). Home games are ideal for travel cost, and you are more likely to get a lesser school to travel to a better (or larger) school. So for us mid-majors in the less-populated upper-Midwest region, there are lots of D-II and NAIA schools at close proximity, but less D-I. I think that teams want to challenge themselves if they can. But there are limits to who they can get on the schedule. The Northern Sun is a very competitive D-II conference. So it's a good option for Summit teams scheduling exhibition matches in both the Spring and early Fall. South Dakota has been fortunate to have a history and good relationship with Creighton, so we have played them frequently in exhibition matches. Not every team is so lucky. JMO

Thank you! St. Thomas now has this note on their spring schedule article (the part at end added): "Friday, March 31 vs. Concordia-St. Paul (4 p.m.)/Closed to Public". One could surely speculate why it's private. I wanted to see how they would fare. The one against UMD is public which would be similar I guess (not sure how close UMD and Concordia currently stand with their spring rosters).

I’m a little disappointed that they didn’t make that match open to the public. Locally, it’s no secret that Concordia-St. Paul is a very good D2 team that could beat some D1’s. But losing to Concordia could hurt snagging some local athletes attracted to the lure of playing D1.

Going with South Dakota and Omaha, knowing nothing about 2023 prospects. Good programs, hope they continue to be so, and that Juhnke can be back and 100%. Interesting league last year. St. Thomas could make it tougher further into the transitioning phase. Western Illinois, that is hard, spent a week in Macomb in 1989 at WIU basketball camp, being relegated to a local elementary school gym, because we were the bottom tier, fairly, small school JV. That is the hardest sell in this league, imo.

Just a quick update on Summit League transfers, all info coming from this board. (the spreadsheet: link) Overall, there have been two transfers out, two in, and there are still 4 in the portal wanting to transfer out (2 Grad, one JR, one SOPH). overall, I'd say pretty below-average number of transfers.* updated June 20th, 12 transfers out, 8 in, plus 4 still in the Portal. Denver and Oral Roberts appear to have been negatively effected the most. Both schools will have a new coach for the 2023 season. South Dakota:

updated spring schedule lists on the previous post - several teams made announcements in mid-late march.
Still nothing from the south-west flank teams of ORU, KC or WIU. Maybe they are skipping a Spring season of exhibition matches.

Looks like Western Illinois and KC are playing spring matches after all. Both just announced on Friday. I added it to the earlier post.
Of note:
1. WIU will be playing in Iowa City on April 22.
2. KC just hosted a ton of teams this past Easter weekend: Arkansas, Mizzou, UNI, Tulsa, Wichita State and Rockhurst.
(ORU literally just hired a new HC, so no surpise he hadn't set anything up for a spring season)
