Yea I’m still in the camp of going after the big mainland and local recruits first and supplementing with foreign players. But definitely excited to see the young talent come in from places we’ve established solid relationships with (France, Bulgaria, etc) but idk if we necessarily need to go shopping around in different countries. Still have to consider team cohesion and chemistry. UH have definitely offered many of the top level US kids. I mean we got Finn and Tread. We also offered guys like Christian Connell(who committed to USC), Kahale Clini(who is at UCLA), Mana Carreiera(Stanford) and Grant Lamoreaux(Pepperdine). If these kids don’t want to come, then UH almost is “forced” to go overseas to remain competitive. I have zero issue with a team full of international players. They are just as good or even better than some of the US kids. If USC, UCLA and Stanford want to “hog” all the domestic kids, they we will have to counter with “hogging” the international ones. 😂

Oftentimes you have to deal with so much more. Visa issues, language barriers, conflicting nationalities, etc. You just have to be mindful of that stuff. Not to mention oftentimes you’re not recruiting in person for the most part. We won’t always have success stories like Thelle, Rado, Stijn, Chakas, etc. and it’s not intelligent to think we always will. But I am more optimistic than I am not but it’s not like American university is always in the running for a national championship on the Women’s side despite being loaded with internationals.

I think Charlie is at a point where he will only offer kids who have been in their countries NT pipeline. I doubt he would go into some unknown place to find some hidden gem. He will just need to search and mine the Jr, National teams of other countries and look for kids who can speak sufficient English to get into UH and those who want a chance to get a degree and play high level volleyball at the same time.
I mean if we have gotten all the kids mentioned in my previous post , UH might not have the urgency to go after guys like Roure and Titriyski. That fact that we lost out on these US kids have forced Charlie to offer a full ride to Titriyski and go look at the France U19 team for players. I don’t think we ever had a French player before this season.
Connell would be Adrien Roure. Lamoreaux or Kainoa Wade would have filled Titriysk’s spot. Then we would have Roman Payne in for 2025 and just add one international player in Stavros Mouchlias. This would make the roster heavy on US kids and maybe only two international kids(Ofeck and Stavros) along with Louis Sakanoko.

And we don’t have Stavros yet, why is he still being mentioned?

It's not particularly unique to the athletics department either though. As a university, UHM takes on a pretty significant number of international students constantly. I think in my past couple years as a student, I've had multiple international students in almost every single one of my classes. The university can handle it's share of international students. If Coach Wade wants to take advantage of that, why not?

But we have 2 signed who both look like big time players so I’m ready to see them in action!

Just curious, how much competition was there to land Route and Titiriyski? Was LBSU or UCLA or some other school in on them too, or did Charlie pull off a coup?

Just curious, how much competition was there to land Route and Titiriyski? Was LBSU or UCLA or some other school in on them too, or did Charlie pull off a coup? I think UCLA is loaded with all the USA kids from the US national team pipeline so there is really no need for them to raid the other country’s NT team Jr players. LBSU obviously got a lot from the Bulgarian NT with their connection to Alex Nikolov and his younger brother. They already have Lazar Bouchkov on the team this year so their Bufgarain pipeline is strong. With LBSU connections to Bulgaria, they also have no need to get the French. UH was fortunate to get both Roure and Titriyski because UCLA and LBSU already have loaded rosters. Hawaii will join the “loaded roster” club soon with all the talent due to come in. Roman Payne is already on the US U19 team and Kainoa will be trying out for the U21 team along with current Warrior Justin Todd. Louis Sakanoko was on the France U 22 team before coming fo UH.

i’m not sold on louis sakanoko starting next year.
i feel like with the talent we have coming in, he would be a great option for “next man up.” one of the outsides or opposites struggle then louis comes in to give a different look, similar role this year before the chakas injury.

We literally haven’t seen any of those TEENAGERS on the court lol please stop this narrative it’s so weird to me. Sakanoko is in a better position to start than a bunch of kids who haven’t played at this level yet…

In regards to Stavros coming to Hawaii. volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/94233/hawaii-2024?page=234When Charlie hinted that the Greek pipeline will continue in his call tye coach show....guarantee its because of Stavros. I hope we can seal the deal with him. It’s been sealed for a while.

Not to mention depending on where his development is, he’ll need some time to grow like Dimi did

Every phase of his game, except for his serving, has gone to another level. Hawaii was blessed when they landed him late in 2023.
