WCC. A new year, and a year without BYU. Can any teams challenge San Diego for the WCC title?

I'd say Pepperdine could probably challenge San Diego, with LMU as a potential dark horse.
Is this the year that Cal Baptist joins the conference?

Is this the year that Cal Baptist joins the conference? This year? No. The season is right around the corner. In the future, maybe. Probably depends on what Gonzaga wants to do.

Cal Baptist is one of the speculated possibilities, along with Seattle, Denver and Grand Canyon. I don't think the WCC will expand unless Gonzaga leaves and maybe not even then. They had eight members for a long time and were fine. They don't play football, so a relatively small conference is okay. If one of the aforementioned teams gets consistently good at men's basketball, that would be the best way to get an invite.

Will be interesting to see how LMU does with so many changes from what would have been the favorite to win the league.

I thought long ago that Grand Canyon would be a great pickup for the WCC, with their great facilities, financing and focus on building strong athletic teams...their beach vb team went to the NCAA championships this year. But an AD told me that their graduation rate is super low, and academically they are not a fit with the WCC.

But an AD told me that their graduation rate is super low, and academically they are not a fit with the WCC. GCU is also a for-profit college, which is likely a dealbreaker for the WCC presidents. All that being said, if GCU had like five straight Sweet 16 appearances in men's basketball, I think they would get a serious look. The main problem for all of the possible additions is that none of them are particularly good at men's basketball. GCU is probably the closest, having made the NCAA tournament two of the last three years. But I think they would need a significantly better and longer track record of success to get consideration. The last addition in Pacific didn't really work out the way I think Gonzaga wanted it to, as Pacific has gone 132-172 (.434) in men's basketball since rejoining the conference. And nine schools works just fine, so there's no real reason to add anyone else.

Those are all names from the past 10 years. Weren't there any legends before 2013-ish?
