Pacific upsets Pepperdine 15-12 in the fifth set. Pepperdine's first loss of the WCC conference. bayarea , I'm not on volleytalk much this year, but every so often I jump into this thread to see if you are still going strong. I miss the WCC, and it looks like some things never change with Pacific. Always at least one big win from them each season it seems.

I guess Pacific used all of their energy/magic against Pepperdine. They were convincingly swept by Saint Mary's...-18, -18, -19
LMU gained steam with each set and completely embarrassed Santa Clara on their senior night with scores of -14, -10, -7.
Pepperdine has gotten more of a fight from USF in the third set, and now leads it 22-20 headed for a sweep...and they get it with a 25-23 third set.

Last time to re-visit this WCC 2023 thread.
This has to be the most disappointing season in...forever? for the WCC. Only one bid, and Pepperdine went out in the first round. Ugh.
The new reality of the NCAA, portal trades becoming so commonplace, commits and transfers chasing the highest NIL money...the emergence of 'superconferences'... I'm not sure how conferences like the WCC stay competitive. They will be left trying to recruit the diamonds in the rough, overlooked or injured players, second-tier players, or those with a legacy for a particular school who simply want to play there.
I'm not optimistic.

I'm not optimistic. Definitely a disappointing season overall for the WCC, but I think it was expected with the top teams losing so much from last year. I think they'll need maybe 2-3 years to get back to where they were competitively, but I think there is a lot of potential in the WCC. Pepperdine loses some important players like Brown and Zelaya but they also bring back Chillingworth, Polk, and Hendrickson. San Diego looks poised to bring in 2-3 transfers and also recruited a couple of talented freshman and depending on how good they are, I think they are going to be back in the tournament in no time. The other teams might struggle again next year. LMU looks like they are losing a lot and I have no idea who else they are bringing in for next season. I'd love to see Santa Clara be competitive again. I still wonder how far they would've gone in 2015 (I think) until Mead got injured.

I still think it's a real uphill recruiting battle for the WCC and other mid-major conferences, and likely to get worse. Santa Clara tried to get elite setters after Mead, but all of them wanted a bigger stage. 6'5 OH Sangiacomo was a third generation SCU student who almost fell into their lap, but they didn't have enough pieces around her. Now that the program has languished for a few years it's hard to get the interest of elite recruits. San Diego, Pepperdine and LMU have had more recent success but I heard Hellmuth (2022 WCC FOY) and Brown (5th year) are in the portal leaving Pepp.
I think to be a successful coach of an unranked mid-major, you have to be really really good either at finding international players or at noticing the late bloomers, the ones who missed a season from injury and got passed over, or the ones who are still raw and could be coached into greatness. The top programs in top conferences will continue to get the cream of the crop each year.
