Portland lost 2-3 to Wyoming.
Pepperdine is leading UCLA 2-1 at the moment in Hawaii.
LMU had an easy(!) sweep of Marist -8, -9, -12 🤪 to move to 3-3 on the season.

Pepperdine had the 2-1 lead but lost 2-3 to UCLA and drop to 1-5 on the season. 🥴

Also...Sac State took Florida to 5 sets. that's something. Sac State lost to Saint Mary's 1-3 and beat Portland 3-1. I consider Florida one of the very best teams in the country. This is a very strange season so far.

San Diego gave up a fourth set lead to lose 1-3 to USC. Stivrens played very well for San Diego. They drop to 3-5.

SD and Pepperdine have had some tough preconference schedules. I anticipate them doing well in conference though.

SD and Pepperdine have had some tough preconference schedules. I anticipate them doing well in conference though. I think 'doing well' in conference this season is going to be more subjective than in previous years. Clearly they both scheduled tough but expected to have a lot more success than they have. It doesn't look like any team has the strength to run the table in conference, and there may be a lot of strange upsets during the season. Also, it seems unlikely any of the WCC teams are strong enough to make a deep run in the tournament this year, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

WCC Week 5:
Thursday 9/21 matches: Portland vs. Santa Clara, 6 p.m., ESPN+ Saint Mary’s (CA) vs. LMU (CA), 7 p.m., ESPN+ Pacific vs. Pepperdine, 7 p.m., ESPN+ Gonzaga vs. San Francisco, 7 p.m., ESPN+
Pre-conference standings: LMU 7-3 (Pablo 31) Pacific 8-4 (Pablo 74) Santa Clara 8-4 (Pablo 133) Saint Mary 6-6 (Pablo 139) San Francisco 6-6 (Pablo 124) Portland 5-7 (Pablo 232) Pepperdine 4-6 (Pablo 43) San Diego 4-6 (Pablo 40) Gonzaga 3-8 (Pablo 242) 🥴
I think the most interesting Thursday matchup will be Pacific vs Pepperdine, with Pepp having only a slight edge. After that, Santa Clara should beat Portland, LMU should beat St. Mary's (who started the season 6-0 and finished pre-conference 0-6!), San Francisco should beat Gonzaga.
San Diego is off until Saturday.

It's a busy night in the WCC with everyone except San Diego in action.
Santa Clara is up 2-1 on Portland (21-25, 25-16, 25-15) and should cruise to a 3-1 win. (SCU's Opp Abutbul has 15 kills at .600)
Saint Mary's had an early lead on LMU but LMU came back to a 23-21 lead, and LMU has taken the first set 25-22. Michelle Shaffer is 6-0-12 for LMU.
Pacific had a pretty good lead on Pepperdine but Pepp found some rhythm and tied it at 22 all, and then won the first set 25-23.
San Francisco is up 1-0 on Gonzaga by a score of 25-9. 😳. However, Gonzaga is up 11-6 in the second set. Go figure.

Gonzaga went up 17-10 in the second set, before Carolina Nova went on a 9-0 serving run for USF before missing a serve. USF came back to win the set 25-21 and to go up 2-0. Up 22-19 and cruising to a sweep.
Pacific fought tough in the first two sets, but dropped both sets 23-25 to Pepperdine. Currently down 9-10 in the third, and likely to be swept after giving a very good fight at Pepperdine.
LMU won their first two sets -22, -21 against Saint Mary's, though they are outhitting SMC .298 to .051. LMU is now up 15-9 in the third and cruising to a sweep.
Portland came back from two blown out sets to take the fourth set and win a tight 5th set 15-13 vs Santa Clara. (Portland has two Robins sisters, from a huge Hawaiian volleyball family, and cousins of former BYU setter/Opp Alohi Robins-Hardy)

Anyway that’s the WCC. USD could have less on Saturday and had plenty of low numbers last year as a top 5 team.
