Operation Underground Railroad does not disclose their financial information, so it's unclear to what extent they are a legit charity or a scam. They also have been accused of going into other countries and just kind of grabbing any sex workers they can, without discriminating between those who have been trafficked and those who were in it voluntarily. Is there such a thing as a volunteered 10 year old kid in the porn/sex business as opposed to one that is being trafficked? Ballard and his "jump teams" have allegedly gone to places like the Dominican Republic and Thailand under the cover of being wealthy Americans wanting to "party" (wink, wink, I guess). They wave a bunch of cash around, local pimps bring in some girls, and the jump teams grab them, even if they're older locals. This is according to several people who have been part of the teams. I don't want to put words in Garrison's mouth, but I'm guessing this is along the lines of what he was referring to. |

It is a pretty incredible story based on true events. There is some question about that "based on true events" claim. It is based on a real person, Tim Ballard, who has claimed he has done certain things, but independent investigation has cast some doubt about his claims. Operation Underground Railroad does not disclose their financial information, so it's unclear to what extent they are a legit charity or a scam. They also have been accused of going into other countries and just kind of grabbing any sex workers they can, without discriminating between those who have been trafficked and those who were in it voluntarily. Other organizations (governmental and non-governmental) have alleged that OUR are basically glory-hounds, looking to make splashy raids that might or might not actually be rescuing trafficking victims but that don't work to effectively stop the practice or break down the criminal organizations behind it. OUR says otherwise, that they are conducting direct action that other organizations are too hesitant to take. Of course, the movie was drawn from Ballard's own books about himself, so it's not likely to reflect opposing points of view. This is pretty much what CNN and MSNBC are conveying to their audience. We’re just positive it’s a lie. We don’t know for sure but I think they’re grabbing sex workers that are volunteers. Yuck |
