Well, not THIS year. That's why it's important that the numbers keep going up. One of the things I've had beaten into me in business, is that for publicly traded companies (or companies looking to IPO/sell) growth trumps profits. If something shows exceptional growth, it's going to get attention. Yea I know... we've seen a willingness from BTN to commit to volleyball... but we havent from ESPN ESPN didnt even commit to womens basketball until during/after covid when the women's tournament got mega-exposed compared to the men WVB doesnt have that counterpart (and they have to compete with football) And the December part of men's (and women's) basketball. Lots of big time matchups scheduled then prior to conference play. Personally I think it's an advantage not to have a true men's equivalent. Not at the pro level where the NBA subsidizes the sport, but in college I like that there's so few comparisons to the men's game by casuals. It's a bummer for fans of the men's game, but the lion's share of resources in the sport goes to women. Could you imagine a head coach of a decent mid major men's basketball team moving over to become an assistant at a women's basketball job? Even if it was some place like Connecticut or South Carolina? Would never happen. It creates problems when trying to expand opportunities for women in the coaching ranks that the pay and opportunities are so much better in the women's game, but it also means that in theory women's volleyball should get the pick of the litter in terms of coaches regardless of their gender.

This is the last season of ESPN contract for the NCAA Championships, Volleyball included. According to the an interview at the Volleyball Day in Nebraska event NCAA president Charlie Baker said they have some interesting proposals for next season. If the NCAA achieves separation for Volleyball with a new network or not we could start seeing some changes in the coming years.

I remember having friends compete in that event, and there wasn't anywhere near the kind of exposure back then there is now. As long as the numbers keep growing - not just ratings, but the attendance records that keep dropping - we'll keep seeing more exposure, more marketing, and more opportunities. The concern for me is when the numbers plateau, or start dipping, even with more exposure. The other advantage for women's volleyball in certain ways is the NFL. Sure, it's tough to have that kind of goliath to compete against in the fall/winter, but since nothing is able to truly compete against it, there's a niche for volleyball as counter programming. Maybe that isn't ideal in terms of maximum growth, but it does provide a path right now for continuing greater exposure. I'll also say that live programming is always going to have a greater emphasis over recorded programming like 30 for 30 if advertising dollars are involved.

If the NCAA achieves separation for Volleyball with a new network or not we could start seeing some changes in the coming years. I'd love to see a lot of the sports broken out. Men's basketball is such a cash cow, but we're seeing some of the sports really get some traction in terms of being profitable events for a media company. I'd put volleyball in that category, along with women's basketball, baseball, and softball. I don't know about hockey because I don't follow it, and soccer I find so mind numbingly boring regardless of level, although I know in certain circles that draws eyeballs, too. I also think lacrosse could be more enticing with more exposure. I know there are a lot of people who find beach volleyball way more exciting to watch than indoor. I'm not one of them, but I see a ton of excitement for the new beach program at Texas that comes from people that don't follow the indoor team much at all.

I know that's part of what upset the people at Texas when they lost the vote for this season for bundling conference matches to keep travel costs down. Limits the mid week games big time. The Tuesday Wednesday stuff can really be a burden with the new conference configurations, especially in the Big 10, though. But I don't know how that stuff is going to get figured out. I know that Oregon has already said they're only flying charter for football and men's/women's basketball. It's a two hour drive to the nearest airport in Portland, then the flight, then traveling to places on the east coast like Happy Valley that are no where near an airport. If you add a Tuesday Wednesday competition to that...whoa. Maybe they change their tune when the season is actually embarked upon? But they're going to feel a need to make up for the $200 million+ 7 season shortfall compared to their conference peers in some way. I don't know what Phil Knight has intended for his estate, but maybe they get a one time bonanza there some day.

TV Ratings 2023 Date | Game | Network | Viewers | 8/25 | Wisconsin-Baylor | BTN | 59,000 | 8/26 | Purdue-Creighton | BTN | 76,000 | 8/26 | Wisconsin-TCU | BTN | 65,000 | 8/29 | Minnesota-Texas | BTN | 84,000 | 8/30 | Nebraska-Omaha | BTN | 518,000 | 9/3 | Texas-Stanford | ESPN2 | 203,000 | 9/6 | Nebraska-Creighton | BTN | 236,000 | 9/10 | Louisville-Penn St | ESPN2 | 53,000 | 9/12 | Stanford-Nebraska | ESPN | 466,000 |
Huskers/Creighton pulling in more viewers on BTN than Texas/Stanford on an ESPN channel. And Huskers more than double that in their Stanford match. Perhaps ESPN might figure out they need to have the Huskers on more often.

BTN gets first dibs for that... they're not letting nebraska get away if they have any say to it. it was only on ESPN yesterday bc ESPN owns the rights to matches Stanford hosts

Perhaps ESPN might figure out they need to have the Huskers on more often. Nebraska is always going to be a giant in attendance and ratings. But I will say that Stanford-Texas match was on a Sunday at 11:30am central, 9:30 pacific. It was moved to that slot as counter programming for the NFL, not to be a record setter ratings wise. Not saying Nebraska wouldn't have pulled a higher number, because I'm sure they would. But given the circumstances I liked the number it drew.

Drawing hundreds of thousands of viewers on a weekly basis grows those individual athletes profiles and grows the sport in a way that will help future professional opportunities in the US. I don't think a Tuesday match is any worse for a student than a Thursday match (which is pretty common).

Afaik the FS1 volleyball record is 246,000 from Creighton/Nebraska last year (I dont know if any other matches have been on FS1?)
That was a 5pm first serve iirc.
