Afaik the FS1 volleyball record is 246,000 from Creighton/Nebraska last year (I dont know if any other matches have been on FS1?) That was a 5pm first serve iirc. I have a feeling the Wisconsin v Marquette match will be close to that or beat it.

So you think this is in the best interests of the "student/athletes" [sic] or is that not a significant criterion in your opinion? Long term? Drawing hundreds of thousands of viewers on a weekly basis grows those individual athletes profiles and grows the sport in a way that will help future professional opportunities in the US. I don't think a Tuesday match is any worse for a student than a Thursday match (which is pretty common). I also think prioritizing mid-week matches to be local/easy on travel would be a very easy way to go. Most conferences have matchups that are very easy on travel, often rivalry matches, that could happen on Tuesday/Wednesdays. In fact, an argument could be made that it is *better* on student athletes to have more days inbetween matches and more flexible schedules. There's a LOT of conference matches, particularly non-P5 but even some in the P5 where they occur on back to back days. I'm not sure Friday night, earlier Saturday starts are in the best interest of student-athletes. There's many factors here, both academic concerns and physical wellness. The biggest academic issue I've always heard (and maybe this has changed, someone correct me if I'm wrong) is student-athletes being informally 'discouraged' or being told it's not feasible to study a certain field because of the conflicts with volleyball practice/requirements not even considering travel.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is common across all sports, as being a D1 athlete is a big time commitment. That said, it can be done. I have a friend who was a D1 distance runner, so he was in season for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. He got his degree in chemical engineering.

Sometimes it’s the academic side that explicitly says the athlete can’t do it. For example, a nursing track that requires Friday clinicals. Coach can be as helpful as possible, but the athlete would literally need to miss matches to get clinicals in.

LV-KY outperformed the WNBA game on ESPN2 (295,000) at the same time.
The WNBA game that followed LV/KY had 373,000 (with a lot more promo)

Wisc-MU seems a bit floppy.. but Wisconsin doesnt seem to have big tv draws anyways I guess LV-KY had strong numbers on ESPN last year... it'd be nice for their games to be on TV more... LV has a whopping 3 ACC games on TV.....

Nebraska will always put television numbers up because the people of this state grew up watch the Huskers on tv. . . Pre B1G , 7 or 8 regular season Nebraska vb matches were on Nebraska Public Television every year… this has gone on since the late 80s. Cook and Pettit before him spends 25 nights in the spring and summer traveling to the small towns giving speeches anfpd updates on the program.
I know the story about Pettit making popcorn 🍿 and pulling people into the coliseum after football games to attend matches is a great story, 35 years of Nebraska volleyball on Nebraska Public Television is the real root of the popularity for volleyball within the state. Of course it didn’t hurt the state produced players like Houghtelling, Larson and Weston but everyone in the state has access to Nebraska Public Television …
I’m not sure it’s like that in every state…

Wisconsin Florida being on opposite the Packers is going to hurt home state numbers Stanford-Louisville going head-to-head with the NFL and WNBA could be a tough go as well. Edit: Will have to watch the Nebraska-Kentucky numbers. It looks like the NFL regional broadcasts will mostly be done. The NBC National broadcast that will be on at the same time will be the Patriots vs Dolphins so the Midwest and western numbers might not be too bad.

Wisconsin Florida being on opposite the Packers is going to hurt home state numbers Stanford-Louisville going head-to-head with the NFL and WNBA could be a tough go as well. That will need to be part of the niche volleyball fills in the future. ESPN obviously sees volleyball as decent counterprogramming to the NFL compared to their other content. The expectations will be lower for what kind of numbers they're hoping for, so it means the Sunday time slot has a chance at continuing to be an avenue to make it to the linear channels, specifically ESPN and ESPN2. They moved the Texas-Stanford match from 5pm to 11:30 central time on a Sunday for this reason. Based on a lot of the numbers avid has been posting, volleyball has been a successful competitor to the WNBA playoff games. That's good news.
