Wisconsin Florida being on opposite the Packers is going to hurt home state numbers it's great counter programming though. I have a zero interest in the Packers, myself.

Stanford-Louisville going head-to-head with the NFL and WNBA could be a tough go as well. That will need to be part of the niche volleyball fills in the future. ESPN obviously sees volleyball as decent counterprogramming to the NFL compared to their other content. The expectations will be lower for what kind of numbers they're hoping for, so it means the Sunday time slot has a chance at continuing to be an avenue to make it to the linear channels, specifically ESPN and ESPN2. They moved the Texas-Stanford match from 5pm to 11:30 central time on a Sunday for this reason. Based on a lot of the numbers avid has been posting, volleyball has been a successful competitor to the WNBA playoff games. That's good news. Correct. Stanford v. Louisville followed by Wisconsin v. Florida, both on main ESPN channels, is clearly intentional. I agree that this is a very good sign for volleyball that ESPN is comfortable putting it as NFL counterprogramming. And ESPN has access to the SEC, ACC and Big 12 going forward.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is common across all sports, as being a D1 athlete is a big time commitment. That said, it can be done. I have a friend who was a D1 distance runner, so he was in season for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. He got his degree in chemical engineering. It depends on the school. Sometimes it’s the academic side that explicitly says the athlete can’t do it. For example, a nursing track that requires Friday clinicals. Coach can be as helpful as possible, but the athlete would literally need to miss matches to get clinicals in. Fair enough. I don't know enough about nursing programs specifically. But that sounds like more of a logistical issue with the scheduling than the material being too challenging. My point is that no major is academically too difficult (if chem e isn't, nothing is) for a dedicated and gifted student athlete.

Huskers/Creighton pulling in more viewers on BTN than Texas/Stanford on an ESPN channel. And Huskers more than double that in their Stanford match. Perhaps ESPN might figure out they need to have the Huskers on more often. BTN gets first dibs for that... they're not letting nebraska get away if they have any say to it. it was only on ESPN yesterday bc ESPN owns the rights to matches Stanford hosts Yep. ESPN can't just put Nebraska on whenever they want. Looking at Nebraska's schedule, they don't appear to play many non-conference matches on the road. Other than the Stanford match (no-brainer for ESPN), it looks like it's just Kansas State, which is obviously not as high-profile of an opponent.

I agree that this is a very good sign for volleyball that ESPN is comfortable putting it as NFL counterprogramming. One big thing for ESPN to look at today (assuming they can track it), is how many viewers are watching both matches, versus watching the Wisconsin-Florida match after the Packers play. I’m sure they’ll be closely watching the timing of the first NFL games ending and if there’s any spikes after that (ie gaining the casual eyeballs), or if the numbers stay high all day long (ie a different demographic than who normally watches NFL games).

I just noticed this, but Fox picked up two Texas volleyball matches on FS1 - the first of two BYU matches, and the first of two Baylor matches, both occurring on a Thursday night. I don’t think that’s new, necessarily. I’m just more focused on it now because of this thread. Fox and ESPN share Big 12 media rights, and then if neither network picks up a conference match for their linear channels, home matches are televised on LHN, and road matches are on ESPN+.
I don’t recall Texas being televised on FS1 before.

That’s a really big platform for what will be a terrible match.
