if anyone is just waiting for this game to happen, feel free to listen to me color commentate at 6pm CT for an hour before this match starts UNT vs Tulsa (need ESPN+ i believe) www.espn.com/watch/catalog/be9385dc-c518-3a55-9197-ec47a9e0e7f6/volleyball#bucketId=29774&sourceCollection=Browse_By_Sport_NewUNT has some high flyers and runs a potent 6-2. they can just overwhelm teams with their offense, or they kill themselves with errors. you never know exactly what you're getting. Treyuanna Rush and Sh'Diamond Holly lead the charge, with Anyse Smith being a rockstar for them recently. Tulsa is led by fifth-year Kayley Cassaday, who leads the NATION in attacks (and maybe kills still?). she had a rather "pedestrian" 16 kills in their 3-1 win over UNT last night, but she averages 5.4 kps and 2.9 dps on the season so far (while hitting .270). Please, I beg you to use cringe-worthy phrases to describe plays that we've heard over the years.
"Natural point"
"Overhand"
"Did you know Asjia's Dad is Jermaine O'Neal"
But, I figured you'd probably actually want to participate in more games in the future....so
maybe when i do the arizona vs usc game, i can be like "skylar fields has clearly been to go-to option for USC ever since she transferred from texas, who is now being led by middle asjia o'neal. asjia comes from a family of athletes, did you know her dad is actually longtime NBA player Jermaine O'Neal? they both love scoring the ball overhand!"

I'd prefer overtime Fields gets a kill we hear "that's a big overhand!" 💀

I have to say though, Bower really does have some amazing hands. This is interesting because Bower's praise usually comes from her non-pure setting abilities, but everything else she does. I always thought her hands could be much cleaner. Even my wife said to me during the game, "Wow, that setter is pretty good"
We knew nothing about her until the game. The main point is that she's being compared during game play to our very, very green freshmen setter. So of course, she looks all-world in comparison.

The his better at the overhand? O Neal or fields? it used to be asjia but her and swindle have looked less than desirable together so now probably fields! asjia's overhand got her on the US national team though so think she has to have the edge (although karch if you're reading this, get skylar in the gym as a right side NOW!)

Well, BYU brought the pain for 1 set only. Just read the comments During the 1st set. Geez a bunch of cry babies. Nice job UT to not freak out (like these posters) and just play. Um the freakout was 100% justified. We were in serious danger of not clearing 10 points Literally how are you supposed to act when your team is playing like a mediocre rec league? I’ve seen fans freak out for less.

Two free seatback seats for tonight's game for the person who first DMs me and is verified Texas fan.
[sheesh, I've been trying to give these away to known VT members and been turned down]

Your freshman setter will look back on this match as her breakout match. She is very good, not as predictable as Bower on the dumps (Bower has 4 more years of experience at D-1), but just as effective. Ella is not quite as good as Bower on defense, but is way better than Bower in the blocking dept. Ella's serve is a little behind Bower. But, ball placement is already a big plus to Swindle vs Bower. Of course freshman will make mistakes but Bower was the reason that 70% of the blocks on the BYU OH happened. She sets way too close to the net with consistent inconsistency! Ella is much better and way more consistent at off the net placement. Bower has a lot of flash which most observers immediately define as her being a great setter. Not so. Olmstead actually allowed Bower to do the splits in the air after most jump sets her first 2/3 years at BYU. All flash and terrible technique. Fans and BYU commentators loved it. Olmstead told a national TV audience after the first match of Bowers career at BYU that she would be able to play in the Olympics if she wanted to. The statement flabbergasted most knowledgeable volleyball observers as something that couldn't possibility be known at that juncture. But Heather loves her and she also loves Bower's younger OH sister who is maybe the 4th or 5th best OH on the BYU roster. She keeps shoving her into matches (like last night) hoping that she will play at an elite level. She can't! Claire Little (OH2) got pulled after the first set vs Texas for what reason? It is unbelievably bad coaching. Elise Stowell is a much better OH than Eden Bower and a good passer unlike Eden. Put her into the match if Little isn't doing the job. But Little was doing the job. Pull the freshman Little and she loses confidence ..... like all freshman. Just really bad coaching. If Olmstead were coaching Texas .... she would have replaced the entire starting lineup after set 1 last night. Crazy bad coaching with Little. I am sure that Little (with less confidence) will be inserted back into the starting lineup tonight now that BYU went down to defeat last night. In a way I hope Olmstead keeps Eden Bower in the line up for tonight so JE can start targeting her all over the court like other teams do. Maybe it would teach a lesson that seemingly can't be learned any other way. Ella Swindle is a very good setter and she will be great by the end of the year .... since JE isn't allowing a few mistakes to pull his talented freshman off the court like some other coaches ....

Dude. Paragraph breaks, please. I like longer posts, but it makes it so much easier when there are paragraph breaks.

I really liked how aggressive Ella was at the net. Lots of critique of her sets, but I wasn’t too bothered by her play last night. Jenna with 42 attempts is too many in opinion, but I think she’ll work on reversing the flow to the right side more as the season progresses. And Madi out of the backrow needs to be used as often as possible, especially early on in matches.

When we are struggling and call a time out, the first set is usually to Madi in the back (if she's in the back). And if I've noticed it, you can be sure that other teams' coaches have. . .

Yes, but there’s not much they can do about it. They dug her a couple times, but for the most part she was hitting it with such force that it was going straight to the defender and knocking them backwards. Her approach is more powerful and accurate from the backrow, IMO. It’s giving Ebony Nwanebu from back there. Plus, I’ll say our entire offense is pretty basic. Any wrinkle is a plus.

But even last year with SKT and O’Neal at the top of her game there were matches where hardly any attacks went to anyone other than Eggleston or Skinner. I do feel like Swindle improves with each match. Not sure what her ceiling is on digs, but in terms of blocks and serving she’s already at a high level as a freshman. She may be the best blocking setter in the country. She’s certainly up there.
