The couple points where Devyn hit at the left pin were in the third set when UW was in serve-receive in rotation 1; Izzy back-right, having just served, putting Devyn positionally at the front-left. In the other two sets when they were on serve-receive in rotation 1, they played things 'normally'. But in the third set, Iowa had 'spun the dial' such that their best server, Urquhart, was serving. My guess is that so as to not add to the 'difficulty' of receiving Urquhart's serves, instead of having Devyn running across the court from left to right while the back row was trying to get to the ball, they just left her on the left side. More a specific match-up thing than anything else. That and it puts the libero in the middle of the serve receive formation, so it's no longer great to attack the seam anymore (since Julia will just take the seam ball). All three serves in that formation, iirc, were directly at TTA, no subterfuge. My rough guess is 75% of all D1 women's teams switch their OH and OPP in rotation 1 (server back right, right after she serves - you can tell because the server has to stand behind the formation and run up as soon as the ball is served). And 90% of pro teams switch, even those with lefty opposites (although the US does the "Buffalo Girl" with Drews, where she runs behind everyone in order to be able to hit on the right side). I'm sure some of the big shots on VT could give much better estimates.

please don't turn this into the Ranelle is a terrible commentator because she talks too much. We had that enough in a few other threads, she's new, she'll learn, at least she's not saying big overhand. Oh, she was not great for a whole host of other reasons beyond hogging the mic. I think she needs to focus less on what the play-by-play guy is saying (and their "banter"), and more on injecting volleyball (and player / B1G) insights into the spaces between his "monologue." It was too cute, yeah, but she'll improve. Ehman has pared down her style in that way to "fit" the match commentary better.

She can't seem to form coherent thoughts on a broadcast despite clearly being otherwise articulate.
