McCarthy dug his own holes. He could have held the line against the Freedom Caucus and tried to reach across the aisle for backup, but instead at every turn he threw bone after bone to the Freedom Caucus. But it was never enough for them, and in doing so he completely burned all his bridges to any possible help from the Democrats.

At the time of the CR, McCarthy didn’t need to negotiate for Speaker votes—the motion to vacate didn’t happen until after passage of the CR. Are you joking or what? Everybody knew those were the stakes. Gaetz was quite open about it, and McCarthy acknowledged it -- dared him to do it. The whole reason for the farce of the DOA spending cuts that McCarthy put through before the deadline was so that he could toss a few bones to the Gaetz crowd in hopes that those symbolic gestures would be enough to appease them. When it wasn't, he then bowed to mainstream GOP pressure and put through the CR, even though he knew it was going to trigger a Speaker vote. If there *had* been some sort of compromise negotiated with the Democrats, they could have saved him by voting "present", but he was long past the point of any compromises with them, due to his continual appeasement of the Gaetz crowd. This is why you don't try to pay off blackmailers and extortionists -- they will only just keep asking for more and more. Nothing McCarthy did for Gaetz was ever going to have been enough. McCarthy and his leadership team negotiated with the Democrats and Biden before the CR came up for a vote. They have confirmed that in their public statements. That is why the CR came to a vote, why there was no aid to Ukraine in the CR and why more Democrats than Republicans voted for the CR. That was the result of negotiation and compromise with Democrats (and the Senate). McCarthy was already negotiating from a weak position because of the deadline. Attempting to negotiate assurances as Speaker as part of a CR doesn't make much negotiating or political sense.

Some Republicans now starting to float the idea of cutting a deal with Dems to elect a speaker, which could get interesting. Mike Rogers (chair of the armed forces committee and an influential R voice): “We’re still the majority party, we’re willing to work with them, but they gotta tell us what they need.”However, Mike Rogers' toupee could not be reached for comment: www.yahoo.com/news/top-house-republican-wants-help-194848280.htmlWhy'd Mike Rogers buy his hairpiece at the thrift store? Because he didn't want toupee!

Nothing better than a molester-enabler in charge of an important federal chamber. we had a full on molester as speaker with Hastert. nothing new. I completely forgot about Hastert. You're right. With him as a precedent, no problem to advance a GOP representative to Speaker with Jordan's "credentials" regarding protecting children.

Didn’t Jordan ignore a Congressional subpoena? Yep, and he voted to toss our democracy as well. Man I hope he doesn't become house speaker, the guy is as dangerous as they come.

Yep, and he voted to toss our democracy as well. This describes a majority of Republicans in the House, including the guy who was just speaker for a year and a half.

After watching him go after Yellen a year or so ago and then Garland more recently (two very mild mannered individuals and in no need of flame-throwing), he definitely stood out TO ME. But as usual, TO ME, you get lost in your own opinions a lot.

Matt Gaetz should be forced to be Speaker since he created this mess. I would almost be for that if it didn't mean Matt Gaetz would be Speaker.
