I wonder why the half-announcement now? Seems an odd time to put out something like this when there are still obviously many details to work out Agreed. It almost feels like something was leaked prematurely. That is, if the whole thing isn’t a hoax.

Well, if you ever needed prima facie evidence that the AVP is not highlighting Kent Steffes documents with recommendations on running a tour, I think this "regional solution" might just be the proof you've been waiting for . . . LOL

The locations are interesting too. Two teams each in SoCal, Central Texas, NYC area, and SE Florida.

If the draft is truly legit, Kloth and Nuss will be on separate teams! Dammit! Although, we will get to see Taryn and Kristen play with other partners. Also, seeing Mel, Alix, Scoles and Cheng switch partners will be cool. All the Partain and Sander (and Phil if he plays) partnerships will be cool, too. The men have a few guys who can switch block, making the field more competitive. The women's side is lacking blockers compared to all the defenders. Maybe some of the NCAA and recent NCAA grads will get to pair up with some solid defenders.

Definitely has my interest. Of course we are all skeptical of the $ aspect, and sustainability, but a draft is always very compelling to me. I assume each city has a coach who drafts? IF they follow my plan (on page 2), it's a good way to pass on some of the expenses to these "franchise" owners.

The significant issue I have with the "team" plan is that it runs from September through November, against football season and NCAA women's indoor volleyball. Also every other major spectator sport in the United States. I agree but I think they have to do this next year. They won't get the top players to come out if they put it before the Olympics.

I don't get the appeal of this league.
Random teams, limited sporting value. Only two matches(?).
If you want to mix up the old formula a bit introduce a 4-Man Beachvolleyball league.

I think this league is a step in the right direction. 1. It creates a competitive market between franchises within the league which is the structure of almost every sport (besides golf/tennis but they have an equipment/country club niche that I don't think we can replicate) 2. It lets people identify with a team beyond just who they like. If it is only 8 teams that's a big miss in my opinion because this league could give lower-level athletes a role to get more exposure if they are playing for a team. For example, it would make me as a Chicago fan care more about watching DJ Klasnic or Bill Kolinske in the round of 16 instead of only tuning in for the top 4 teams playing. 3. It helps build a local fanbase. There are regular games at a designated space that people can attend.
The major downside would be if it stretches the fanbase too thin, it could just make it so that there's no one watching anything.
These are my preliminary thoughts. I also agree with the sentiment that I like that people are invested in trying to improve on what we have right now.

Also every other major spectator sport in the United States. I agree but I think they have to do this next year. They won't get the top players to come out if they put it before the Olympics. I would suggest that if there is something in the plan that more or less dictates failure and said element is the only option, best to rethink or maybe just not do it at all. "Why did you schedule against the NFL?" "Because if we didn't we wouldn't have been able to get Miles Partain and Kristen Nuss" Players and quality of play matter for sure, but if I were a promoter, I would rather schedule against mid-season baseball and nothing else with Flint/Scoles than take on the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB playoffs with TKN. One thing I wonder is whether this basically abandons the lifestyle element of the game altogether and, if so, why the AVP people think that is a good idea. The idea that the game sells without the beach element is a dubious proposition, particularly since half the field are not very good athletes by professional standards. They seem to be assuming that sand (intentionally did not say beach) volleyball is so compelling that if its run like any other sport, it will do just fine, as long as people give it a try. I would doubt that. Good beach tournaments have traditionally had environments very different from the more staid atmosphere at a Thursday night NBA game for example. Can the sport do without that? I wonder? Also the discussion of this on the Old School FB page is very amusing.

I think this league is a step in the right direction. 1. It creates a competitive market between franchises within the league which is the structure of almost every sport (besides golf/tennis but they have an equipment/country club niche that I don't think we can replicate) Isn't the sports niche in culture what has driven every flush period in its history? Isn't the beach culture the equivalent of the country club niche - you are 100% right on equipment though. There are a few other non-competitive league examples also (boxing, MMA, pro wrestling, MLS2. Do people do that much anymore? Isnt the modern trend in sports fandom as much about following players as teams? I'd like better locations but 8 seems right to me, maybe even less. There isnt that much talent. If I were a new fan in Chicago for example and someone brought out Kolinske/Rafu as my team, I'd question why they couldn't get actual pro athletes3. It helps build a local fanbase. There are regular games at a designated space that people can attend. I love this part of the idea. Hermosa fans would go to 10 events a year if they had them, and this probably give them something like that (if only the scheduling were better) Really lets the sport get more out of diehards, which is a model that has worked for tons of niche media in the last 10 yearsThe major downside would be if it stretches the fanbase too thin, it could just make it so that there's no one watching anything. These are my preliminary thoughts. I also agree with the sentiment that I like that people are invested in trying to improve on what we have right now. Really enjoyed your post, added a few thoughs

See folks, the problem here is that ONLY VolleyTalk "long time users" would actually be able to distill the players, regions, groups, schedule etc. which comprises this tour LEAVING, "the general public" to a population of ZERO. You see, the old Marketing 101 adage that "they will beat a path to a better mousetrap" DOES NOT apply to pro beach volleyball. You MAY or may NOT like Kent Steffes' posts, but regardless (not irregardless), that doesn't make him wrong, DE FACTO. So, with that all said, best of luck, I'll watch ANY AVP pro (I'm from Santa Cruz, so the pick'ns are small) playing in ANY game, at ANY time, with ANYBODY . . . but that a tour "doesn't make" . . . With those ramblings, you take it from here, but the future (well, Sept to Nov) is bleak. Just get me a casino (pref Ballys) with a permanent court and "I'll watch ANYONE" provided "they have points" . . . Mahalo.

If it's only a single match per gender it should be a longer series. Best of 7! Or even play all 7 no matter what and utilize the results in tiebreakers.
