Do transfers need agents? With the amount of NIL money floating around, how difficult is it to convince a top-level player from a mid major, or even solid talent from a power 5 program, to transfer to one of the top 20-30 programs in the country? I do not think it could be that difficult.. “Hey, Mary this is Coach X. We’d love to have you come here in the spring. Scholarship? Sorry, but not in the spring but we can start you off with enough NIL connections to cover your tuition, housing, meals, and have plenty left over for that car you wanted.” NIL = legal "slush fund". NCAA is now NSPAA (National Semi-Pro Athletic Association).

No. The portal never really closes. The “window” we all refer to are two times during the year where a waiver is applied. For 30 days in early December to early January players who enter the portal receive a one time waiver where they’re not required to sit out a year if they transfer. There’s a similar 15 day window at the beginning of summer. Victoria Schmer is a grad student. Grad students receive the waiver anyway, so there’s no point for her to wait for the window to open. We say the portal is “open” because there’s an understanding of what that means, but it does get confusing because the actual operation is different than the literal meaning. I hope that helps. What determines a grad student? Do they have to be Fall grads or can they be Spring grads too?

We say the portal is “open” because there’s an understanding of what that means, but it does get confusing because the actual operation is different than the literal meaning. I hope that helps. What determines a grad student? Do they have to be Fall grads or can they be Spring grads too? They get a degree. Sure. Fall, spring, summer. Whenever they complete their degree requirements. The thinking behind it is that transferring hampers the ability of a student athlete to earn a degree, which is ostensibly why we have student athletes in the first place. So the NCAA is “protecting” student athletes by putting restrictions around them transferring until they’ve earned their degree. Once they’ve earned their degree, allegedly they don’t need as much protection, so they can transfer without penalty. All of it gets confusing and hypocritical real quick. Most non revenue sports were allowing transfers without players having to sit a year long before football and men’s basketball were. But even before there was any such thing as a transfer portal the NCAA came out with the grad student exception for football and men’s basketball. Then once the portal came around, everyone could transfer. Initially the idea was that athletes would only be able to use the portal once, and then if they transferred the second (or more) time they’d have to sit out. But the NCAA kept giving players exemptions, so that practically players could transfer as much as they wanted. I’m assuming they’ve received a lot of blowback from coaches and athletic programs, so then they instituted the new windows and allegedly are going to crack down on issuing exemptions for multi school transfers. But the grad school exemption came before any of this. Like I already stated, the reasoning being they already earned their degree, so they don’t need the protection undergrad students still trying to earn their degree do. Does that make sense? I mean as an explanation, not as a policy.

So...if someone doesn't graduate until the Spring semester, the portal will still consider them a grad student and they can enter the portal now instead of waiting for the portal period to open?

If it’s time for the 2024 Transfer Thread, that means it’s also time for the 2024 Transfer Tea thread. I know some of y’all got some tea you’re dying to spill. 😀

So...if someone doesn't graduate until the Spring semester, the portal will still consider them a grad student and they can enter the portal now instead of waiting for the portal period to open? The portal period doesn't determine when they can enter the portal. It just determines whether they're eligible for a waiver from the rule to sit out a year. It's easy to get confused in volleyball because for the longest time no one sat out a year. The way it would work in that case is that they enter the portal, they're not eligible for a waiver because they entered the portal outside the two "windows" that are eligible for the waiver. But they graduate in the spring and therefore they're eligible to transfer with a waiver because they're a grad student.

No question. For the top players they're not even really semi pro at this point. For some basketball players who can be stars at the NCAA level but don't really have a position in the NBA, they'll probably make more in college basketball per year than they do as a pro.

There are currently 208 D1 transfers in the portal and 165 of them are grad transfers. The other 43 are likely walk-ons or not currently on a roster.
The CVT instagram page has some who I believe are not in the portal yet (or maybe I missed them). I've also seen a couple of players that updated their profiles on their old recruiting sites, but I haven't seen any that are earth shattering for high D1 programs.
