Did anyone peep the possible A team on Madi’s new TikTok? One team is winning 20 to 8. And one side includes Carlson, Lauenstein, Skinner, Singletary, Halter, Akana, and Rutherford. Speaking of Rutherford . . .

not volleyball related but I think it’s worth a mention here: y’all’s Lulu Sun just reached a career high WTA ranking of #51 by reaching the QF at the Monterrey Open. Amazing achievement since she was hovering in the 700 range just 3 years ago. She can potentially crack the Top 40 if she goes all the way an wins the tourney. Peyton Stearns btw is currently ranked 5 spots above Sun at #46 and she too can achieve a career best ranking should she win her next round at the tourney in Cleveland. Congrats!

There's an amazing nugget in here i had never known before. Jerritt Elliott wanted to be the volunteer coach at Texas. Mick Haley turned him down as the position was filled. He goes to USC as the volunteer and works his way up to the first assistant. When the head job comes open, they don't hire JE, they hire Haley for 2 years in the future when his contract with the olympic team ends. They hire JE to be the 2-year interim. So what does he do? He recruits two #1 recruiting classes (no doubt eventually playing for Haley was a part of that) and goes to the final four only to see Haley come in and take his job as planned. Haley goes on to win 2 national championships in his first 3 years with the players JE would have recruited for him as juniors and seniors. Are Mick and Jerritt friends?

I don’t think they’re enemies per se, but Haley lives in Austin. I’ve never really seen him around the program. It seems like it would be really easy to reach out to him, especially to acknowledge anniversaries of the two national championships Haley won at Texas. Haley isn’t recognized at matches. He’s not invited to do commentary.
There’s a big difference between best of buds and mortal enemies. Without having any inside scoop I’d say they’re firmly on the middle.
Remember too there were some hurt feelings on both sides when Haley departed. Texas is not used to head coaches leaving on their own terms for a gig somewhere else. Haley had asked for a raise and the opportunity to coach the Olympic team under similar circumstances he was granted at USC and was turned down. Then Texas struggles under Jim Moore while Haley wins a couple of national championships at USC early in Elliott’s tenure. There was a lot of second guessing going on at the time.
More interesting to me was Dave Rubio being the one that encouraged Elliott to coach in the college game when he was still running a club program in Los Angeles after being a high school coach. I knew Elliott and Rubio had different ties together. A recent one was the hiring of Cursty Le Roux who played for Rubin, but there have been other tie ins over the years. But to hear Elliott give Rubio such foundational credit for the formation of Elliott’s coaching career was startling and enlightening for me.
That said, that interview was more of a struggle for me to make it through than it should have been. There was something about the format or the interview that wasn’t doing it for me. I can’t completely put my finger on it, other than I don’t find the interviewer very compelling at all. It felt more like he was going off a checklist or a script than something organic. I still always enjoy Elliott’s public face. I just wish we got more of it, but I’m glad he’s out coach, so if he doesn’t like the public engagement side of things all that much, so be it.

A&M always goes crazy for this match. The key thing is to follow up with it and show a semblance of that excitement for other matches. I’d never heard of Cotton Holdings before they became the title sponsor for the Texas - Texas A&M rivalry series. I assumed it had something to do with the plant, the cloth manufactured from it, or some kind of clothing line. Nope. It’s named after the initial investor, Wayne Cotton, who owns a storage and moving business in Houston and helped Cotton Holdings with their start up with financial support and getting other investors on board. I also looked to see if the principals at Cotton Holdings were Aggies or Longhorns. Turns out they’re neither, although I think their affiliations with A&M have been more extensive than with Texas over the years. Both of the founders and many of the top management came from Sam Houston State. If they were looking to create a better brand awareness I think this could be an excellent opportunity for them. I’ve never heard of them before now.
