They could lose in every sport but win in football and none of it will matter. After all these years Iāve never stopped and wondered until todayā¦Do Texas A&M and UT consider each other as their biggest in-state rivals for volleyball? I would have guessed Baylor for UT and not A&M. Or is this more of a football thing? texas & texas a&m despise each other in general...a&m did not want texas to join the sec...but football is king in texas

I could write a thesis paper on the Texas - Texas A&M rivalry and what makes it unique in college sports. Itās less about Texas. I think UT is uniquely arrogant. Thatās in the DNA of the institution. But there are other arrogant institutions, whether academically or in the college sports world. Particularly among flagship schools. I think of the relationship of Michigan versus Michigan State. Or North Carolina vis a vis North Carolina State. But really any place where thereās a perceived main liberal arts college and then another land grant school. Itās relatively common. The grandiose over the top self image Texans have of ourselves exacerbates this to a certain degree that may not be found elsewhere, but the roots of it are in place in other places. I particularly find a link with Michigan alumni for example, who definitely do not think their sh1t stinks in the same way UT people see themselves. A&M, on the other hand, is not a typical ag and engineering school. For most of its history it was an all male college with compulsory ROTC and military service after graduation. The first women werenāt admitted until the late 60s. ROTC became voluntary in the mid 70s. The administration kept adding to the curriculum over the ensuing decades, increasing enrollment, expanding the footprint of the university. Then about 15 years ago under governor Rick Perry he purposefully appointed people to the board of regents and a chancellor who had a vision to escalate enrollment to gargantuan levels in an effort to fulfill what they saw as part of a public universityās charter - provide opportunities for the people in the state. The University of Texas faced many of the same pressures, but fought back, and so maintains something of an elitist air where itās extremely difficult to obtain admittance in ways it is not as difficult to get into A&M. This massive cultural change over the past 50 years has created all kinds of schisms in the personality of the A&M student body and former students. They still have the Aggie Corps, the now voluntary ROTC group (thereās not even a required military obligation if you pay your own way, which some do - they want to be part of the Corps without going into the military afterwards). Itās a central institution thatās both celebrated and made fun of by the other students simultaneously. They have the yell leaders, young men who are voted on to lead cheers for the student body. They have a lot of traditions that are rooted in their compulsory military background. But now they also have a thriving Greek system which creates very mixed reactions among Aggies as being opposed to the general Aggie culture. They really miss the Bonfire, which officially ended in tragedy in ā99, although itās still kept alive with an off campus ceremony to this day. Itās not the same galvanizing and unifying endeavor it used to be, though. I say all this to say that being a unified community is extraordinarily important to A&M as a student body. Without the same kind of richness in terms of bonding activities, and with a much larger student body (over 70,000) thatās much more coed and urban than it used to be, itās more challenging than it was in the past even though it remain a fundamental part of the schoolās DNA. One thing they can agree on is that TU, as they love to call us, is a no good bunch of effete elitists with an undeserved feeling of superiority. Freshmen go through Fish Camp, where theyāre indoctrinated to all the evils of the school in Austin. Their school song is all about beating Texas. Hating on Texas is their richest surviving tradition and they cling to it as a bonding agent with a death grip. The fervor is not equaled on the Texas side. We think of them as our little brother institutionally, which as you can imagine infuriates them further. Most of the animosity is a mirror of the intensity they feel for us, rather than something generated systemically the way it is with them. Honestly there arenāt any real volleyball rivals for Texas other than Nebraska. Baylor was a big game, especially when they had Pressley, but theyāve never been a rival. Just a top opponent that provided a big match up. A&M was good there for a while. Frankly, they were the better program when Elliott first took the job. But after a few years Texas overtook them and they simply havenāt found the same consistent success. Their fan base regularly goes absolutely bonkers in Reed arena when Texas comes to play in volleyball, but then attendance will fall to the hundreds for their next match. Weāll see how much Morrison changes that as the head coach, but heās not quite there yet. Heās only in his 2nd year, though, so he has time to develop them into something special. They should be a powerful program, given their location and the resources they have available. IMO itās simply about finding the right coach, and whether thatās Morrison or the next person I have to feel like itās going to happen. Iāll say this. The A&M match in Austin is UT volleyballās best chance at filling up the Moody Center for a match. Texas may not match A&Mās animosity, but it certainly exists. Thereās a feeling of wanting to put them back in our perceived place for them thatās very satisfying when we beat them, and frustrating when we lose. Like we enjoy chanting when we beat them and they start filing for the exits, āPooooooor Aggies! Poooooooor Aggies!ā

I was so excited to see that the We Are Texas was going to be a three parter. I thought, āWeāre going to get an hour and a half on the team! Awesome sauce!ā
Nope. First episode clocks in at about 11 minutes. Womp womp.
It bums me out Cursty Le Roux isnāt interviewed. I mean I get it, but the new assistant wasnāt a part of the team last year, so it feels strange hearing her wax about the players. Iām sure this is the right way to do things from a cultural perspective, but as a matter of truth telling it doesnāt quite sit right.
I enjoyed Fawcettās segment. She looks so young on camera! I mean, sheās not exactly old, but she looks like she could still suit up as a student athlete. Iām so happy she was brought on as an official member of the staff.
Itās odd not seeing Sullivan so far, but I assume weāll see him at some point in the next two segments. Also, I hope they were able to record some comments from OāNeal and Phillips. And Bergmar, too. It doesnāt look like it, though.
I also wish some of the backups could share about their joy and their fulfillment regarding being part of the process, even if their playing time wasnāt what they wanted. They did have a short comment from Singletary talking about going to the White House.
I really wish it could be an hour long feature, but thatās just the fan in me speaking.

Curious what the fans think - will Jenna lose her spot? And if so, will it be to Whitney? Byrd? I think she needs to really step up if she wants to stay on the floor based on the scrimmage alone.
And Iām sure this has been discussed many times on this thread, but thatās a lot of pages for me to sort through š

I assumed Lauenstein would redshirt as she continues to recover from an injury and take care of her infant, but sheās back out on the court. From practice snapshots she SEEMS to be ahead of Wenaas, but itās not truly clear if thatās accurate or not. Thereās still a lot of mixing and matching going on. Iād say right now starting setter seems to remain a bit unsettled. Who is going to replace Barnes in the back row, whether another little or another 6 rotation pin, and then whether Wenaas keeps her starting role or not. Also, who the 6 servers are going to be. Lauenstein may have the most effective serve on the team0, so thatās going to be a factor, too.

I hate to gauge things off of one scrimmage, it just looked like Jenna wasnāt able to terminate and got pretty ātippyā. Maybe that was due to not connecting with her setters, idk. I would love to see Whitney out there, but Jenna did show up last year when it mattered most. I know they will put the best players on the court (I mean, they definitely have options.) Will be interesting to see what shakes out!

Jenna had three blocks in the Natty that live rent free in my head: Jackson, Beason, Beason.

Jenna is such a good technical blocker but Whitney has more length and jumps higher so I think donāt think sheāll be deficient in that area at all. (Those also live rent free for me)
