Watching Purdue vs Minn right now. I love seeing 5’8” Ciccione just rip every swing. Also seeng Kenna Wollard (both parents were athletes at ILL) in a Purdue uniform kills me.

Don’t want to clutter the match thread with this, but imo the consistent bad passing, bad defense, and lack of aggressive swings is a culture/mentality problem within the program. It’s been persistent enough that I don’t know if I see it ever improving under Tamas. He’s had some bad luck at Illinois but unless something changes as the season goes on I think we need a coaching change.

I'm going to log off for a bit, at least until we get back to winning form. As someone fairly connected to the program, it's hard to watch. This team is broken and I have no positive things to say about it. It isn't about the actual losses this weekend...Oregon and Washington are formidable opponents...but the manner in which we lost. The product being put on the court is atrocious to see as a viewer. Hopefully we get it turned around and, if not, changes are made before our program sinks to a level that will be hard to recover from.

Tough weekend, Illini. Roll the figurative ball under the net and get em next time. Good middle connections tonight- love seeing Cari and Ashlyn ripping.
Safe travels home, all!

My good friends Charlie and Patrick were at the Washington game and sent this update, maybe worth sharing from someone outside of our regular Illinois group: (warning he is an very honest man) “Fran, I attended your game tonight, and I have to say, it was quite the sight, though not for the reasons one would hope. Illinois looked like they were attempting to play a game of “guess the strategy,” but even they seemed unsure of what that strategy was. Coaches looked confused and unsure, players were worse and it all was one big mess. Coaches were running the same plays over and over, expecting different results against Washington—it just doesn’t work like that. A hitting percentage of -0.062 in the first set tells you everything you need to know—far too many errors, and no real adjustments to be seen. The coaching decisions, or lack thereof, were puzzling at best. It seemed as if the approach was, “If it’s broken, just keep doing it,” with little to no attempt to make changes. The guy sitting beside me said it looked like they had the same game plan last night with Oregon and it didn't work there either (he had an illinois shirt on so I am guessing he was a fan). Players like Terry and Hernandez were clearly struggling horribly, yet there were no substitutions made to change the momentum. The bench sat idle the entire match, and I can’t imagine it did much for their confidence knowing they weren’t being considered as a solution, regardless of what was happening on the court. I will say that they did look like they were having fun and to be honest I would not have wanted to get into that sh&^ show either. What made it all the more unfortunate was that this was Hendrickson’s first return to Washington as a coach. To have her hitters perform so poorly, with a team hitting percentage of -0.030 in the third set, was just not the impression anyone would want to leave from a supposed “top” coach. It was a difficult night for her credibility, and the offence looked completely out of sync. It was shocking to see players kept on the court despite their performance being, well, a disaster. Letting them stay with negative hitting percentages felt like watching a bad movie on repeat—why not change the channel? It’s almost like accountability took the night off, and the result wasn’t pretty. At this level, if you’re not performing, it’s time to pass the torch, not double down on the chaos. And to make matters even worse (and sorry to be the one to tell you) Illinois has the dubious distinction of now holding the bottom spot in the Big Ten for hitting percentage. Welcome to the basement folks- at least from here, the only way is up. It’s disappointing to see a team with supposed depth struggle this much. I honestly felt embarrassed for them tonight; it looked like they didn’t belong in this conference at all. I’ve seen more cohesive play from my niece’s little club team, and their lineup is composed entirely of players under 5’7”. On the positive side, Washington had an excellent game, and credit to them for taking full advantage. I hate to be so direct, but it’s a good thing you missed this one”

Sharping has to go. Like mid-season replacement and the rest need to be informed that they’re on the chopping block and if they don’t figure something out to make this season surmount to something respectable, they’re gone. The defense is absolutely atrocious and downright embarrassing.
There has to be a reputable defense coach that we could hiring mid-season to stop the bleeding and so we can finish with some integrity in tact. If Wisconsin can bring in Carlini as a “consultant”… then we can do something similar.
I’m watching Purdue now and I just struggle to accept the downfall of Illinois volleyball. Purdue has arguably a worse facility and is in a less than glamorous Midwest town with up and down athletics programs (all similar to Illinois) and yet, has seemingly continued to maintain status in the last 5 years in the top 10 despite so many changes in college athletics (NIL, frequency of transfers, Covid year, etc). The Tamas’ seem like great people but if you cannot sell a top 10 public institution and surround yourself with people with a proven track record of success with teaching skill that you may not be the best with (passing), then it’s time to stop the bleeding and make a change.
This cannot become an Iowa-like program. There is too much history and tradition of success.

Now can i do without the corny Indiana talk like the Boards of Belein, yes, but a great facility. What made any Illini fans think this year was going to be any different that what it has been?

Depth for one… yet all our depth is mysteriously injured and not even traveling again, so that point is squashed. Defense anchored by CMM and she has been incredible but she can only do so much. Thought Averie would carry a bigger load but she has not looked as impressive yet as she did in moments last year. Great freshmen, but they’re only as good as our passing can be.. clearly we were grasping at straws in hopes of a less frustrating season. I’m sure we’ll figure it out in the last quarter of the season like we have in recent seasons but it’ll be too little too late.
