As I said in the Washington game thread, this coaching staff apparently thinks they don’t have to work on fundamentals with D1 players, and either can’t or aren’t interested in working on basic passing techniques. Our passing has been so bad for so long with so many different players one cannot blame the players, the coaches aren’t doing their job. Last night the coaches should have told Mosher to set the middles until their arms fell off. And I lost count on the number of times balls were dumped into our middle with no defensive adjustments. After a year and a half Lilly should understand where to go on defense, and quick-twitch muscles are not a substitute for a defensive scheme. Mid-season, Sharping should be told to clean out his office the minute they get off the plane today.
How many years are left on Tamas contract?

I am disappointed to see everyone’s comments here and to make matters worse we keep the same game plan. I’m not a volleyball coach but what the heck is going on with not making any substitutions? Personally I’d like to see a change up and see what Taylor/Reigan could do if given the chance because I don’t think it can get worse and if we plan on keeping this rotation. The only thing I can think of is Taylor is not well enough to play? But my friend Charlie said her warm up was impressive. If we don’t stop the bleeding then I can see a mass exit next year on top of the loss of a huge chunk of our players (do we even compete without Raina?) . Why stay at a program that lacks the ability to compete at all and where bottom basement hitting percentages are rewarded? I could see smith, deboer and philpot saying “thanks but no thanks”. This is disheartening and I fear being in Huff next week for the Nebraska game- mostly for the players AND the fans.

The way we have benn playing, I wouldn't be shocked if by some miracle we beat NEB and lose to NW.

Not to continue the Illini beat down, but what’s telling to me was the Oregon match. I believe it was late in the third, once the wheels had completely fallen off, where the broadcast team said Illinois had only 3-kills out of the middle?
I’ve been saying that Eli has no place on our coaching staff and it’s time to find a replacement. Our passing/defense has slightly improved (thanks to CMM) but it still looks very sporadic and hectic.

I also wonder if a more structured system would make passing more intuitive for our players. Watching Oregon and Washington, it was clear that their players were consistently positioned correctly and making the right reads, which suggests a deeply ingrained system that minimizes the need for guesswork. If our system were similarly well-developed, I believe it could significantly improve our passing consistency—perhaps this is what you meant by needing a stronger defensive scheme. Regarding Lily, I’m genuinely a supporter. She’s stepped into a demanding role and faced considerable expectations, and these last two matches would have posed a challenge even for Caroline. We also were able to get away with being bigger in our earlier games and less sophisticated teams which I do not feel prepared us for what we are facing now, IMO. :-S

Sad that we thought we had solved the depth problem but where except for DS/L. Not really seeing the plus side of Campbell being added. I hope we didnt waste a scholie. We have one pin sub to cover both OH/OPP and not sure we even have a back up MB at this stage. I was advocating for an extra arm on the OH.

I will say our passing has been upgraded but thats due to the skills of Averie & CMM and nothing to do with Sharpling. Raina is still a weak passer after 4 years. We need to re-format our passing scheme to hide her.
Lily has been playing better so no complaints there. CMM would be running lots of laps in practice for missing 5 serves, especially in clutch situations.

As someone who’s followed and a fan of Illinois for a very long time I have to say I’m really concerned about where our program is heading this season like everyone else. ilalum92 I don’t think this is depth rather coaching, I don’t think we have a competitive gym right now and that is evident with our results. I am so sad that we are sitting at the very bottom of the Big Ten, averaging only 9.17 kills per set and a hitting percentage of .064—both the lowest in the entire conference. Defensively, 10.33 digs per set isn’t cutting it either, and it’s clear there are some big gaps in our defensive structure and positioning as noted by many thus far. These numbers point to issues with player development and a lack of accountability for poor performance. What’s even more frustrating is the reluctance to make creative adjustments in games which shows a real disconnect between coaches and players. Players look lost and I don’t see players trusting the coaches and believing they know what to do. Without the right mindset, we’re going to keep seeing the same problems (repeat x how many years now?). I get a sense our coaches have such arrogance they think they know better. Just in case it is not obvious, the panic button is officially being pulled out by this fan.
