Can some of my fellow Illini fans shed some light on the transfer portal for me? First question, who has access to the transfer portal? Obviously student athletes who are entering the transfer portal have access, but on the other side, besides other coaches and institutions, do fans have any sort of access? I’m asking this because it seems like people have so much information on who is in the portal? Whether or not the information is true, how does word circulate if a player is in the portal? I understand some athletes may post on social media that they’ve entered the portal, but I’m thinking that every athlete post that. More curious on the process. The portal is accessed by SA's, compliance officers and coaches. People on the VT board have info because they have connections to people with access to the portal with big mouths OR access to students who are in the portal. People enter the portal usually before a post/instagram goes up. Lots of transfers happen without the portal thru former players, club coaches, etc. They know their options before entering the portal. The portal can list a player as contact or no contact.

Two other things I've seen that I'd thought I would put my two cents in for...I'd expect at least 1 current player on our roster to transfer out & I'd be very surprised if Lauenstein is interested in Illinois. Very unlikely. Portal should be exploding soon, will be exciting to monitor. It is sad to see someone willing to come to Illinois on scholarship decide to leave. Hard for a coach to honestly tell someone he recruited they are unlikely to ever see the court on a meaningful level, but it has to be done. There are two scholarship players I don't believe will ever contribute. With only twelve scholarships, two non-contributors is not sustainable. Hopefully, Tamas can and will help find other opportunities that will enable the two of whom I am thinking find a school where they can see the court. Long time reader and first time commenter here — Do we have a scholarship tracker of any kind here? I feel like it might be useful to see on our roster page

Once a player enters the portal their scholarship remains intact until the end of the academic term. The volleyball transfer window opened on the day the NCAA tournament brackets were announced and remains open for 45 days. If someone wants to keep their scholarship for the spring semester there has to be a sweet spot before the 45 days expires and after the academic term ends. If the academic term ends more than 45 days after the portal opens the athlete runs the risk of not having a scholarship for the second semester of the academic year if they enter the portal.

The time frames were changed starting this year

Still don't understand the logic of not considering Assembly Hall as a venue for home games. The men's and women's basketball teams have their own practice facilities separate for AH. They don't practice at the Hall. They don't play home games in August or September and almost all of October. The wrestling team has home matches at Assembly Hall - in October. Is Tamas against it? Is Josh Whitman against it? Thoughts? The State Farm Center would be a terrible venue for volleyball matches. One of the primary advantages to the team playing in Huff is how close the fans are to the court. The noise and atmosphere in Huff provides the team with a significant home court advantage. Those advantages would be lost by moving to SFC. If the court at the SFC were located closer to the fans only one side of the arena would be available for seating. Putting the court in the middle on the basketball court would mean everyone other than those seated in folding chairs on the floor would be a significant distance from the court. The noise of 3000 fans would disappear in the SFC. I say this as a person who thinks Huff is a terrible place for fans because so many of the seats have restricted views. As bad as Huff is for the fan experience, SFC would be worse. I have suggested if Huff is too expensive to replace Huff could be renovated by rotating the court 90 degrees in which case seats could be run from courtside virtually to the ceiling without posts getting in the way of the view and seats could be configured behind each baseline, significantly increasing seating capacity. Locker rooms, exercise and training facilities would have to be upgraded, the HVAC system would have to be replaced, and something would have to be done about parking, but using the Huff structure would be considerably less expensive than building an entirely new arena. Let me just throw out that I think it was Iowa, during a transition period, had the volleyball court east-west as it were, at one end of their big arena where a basket would be, rolled in bleachers for the other side and dropped a curtain. It was not a bad environment for a few thousand people. Maybe they could at least consider that at SFC for a match or two and see if it has any possibilities.

Looks like ilalum92 just answered your question. I'd only add that the best way for the rest of us non-connected fans to find out who has entered the portal is to follow the College VBall Transfers social pages. If you use Twitter or Instagram, the links to those pages can be found in their linktree at: linktr.ee/collegevbtransfers. That account serves as a way for student-athletes to get the word out that they've entered the portal and I think most (maybe all) SA's actually submit their info to that account, in addition to entering the official portal.
The best place on VT to keep tabs on who's in the portal will be to visit the top post of vballfreak808's College Volleyball Transfers (2024) thread. They link and maintain a (forthcoming) google document there every year with everyone who enters the portal.

Welcome to the Illinois conversation! I appreciate your suggestion. I'm actually reluctant to list any scholarship information on the first posts of the thread. I have no personal connection to the Illinois volleyball team so I've got no actual information on scholarships beyond inferences we all make based on public NLI signings and announcement timing. That's still too obscure for my liking to post anything about scholarships. My other more ethical issue with listing anything about scholarships is that the team and players don't publicly release or post specifics about scholarships themselves. It wouldn't feel right (to me) to post something here that they don't make available/prominent to the public.
That said, I do totally share your desire to have a more concrete tally on our scholarship count! I'd love to have more clarity on whether we've got any open scholarship slots as we go into every offseason. We do a lot of posting about our transfer needs/wishes and we don't really know if there's scholarship room for them or if the coaches are even pursuing it.

Illinois VB, both Tamas’, and Hendrickson are all following Vernon (OH from Oregon State) on IG.
Illinois VB and Hendrickson also follow Carney (OH- Wake Forest) and Nolan (MB- UNC)

Ah, gotcha! That's what I assumed. It's a shame that scholarship stuff isn't as clear cut as basketball or even football. Hopefully as the sport grows in the coming years that'll change!

I hope any transfers make their decision early enough to enroll for the spring semester. Enrolling for the second semester has the double benefit of integrating them into the team and it also reduces the amount of springtime angst on this thread waiting to see if we have any transfers. Early enrolling is an issue for grad transfers who may have to remain at their current school to complete graduation requirements.
