They aren't tied together in any way, shape, or form. Contrived
If SS can help us this year but Olivia Swenson cannot ... then SS should be on the court while her sister isn't. Not a shred wrong with that.
That said, there's no reason to formally redshirt them at all. Maybe they never set foot on the court all season. Maybe. Or maybe they help us out for a few sets. Or maybe one or both help us out for a significant number of sets this season, even if them being on the court doesn't end up moving the needle towards winning those matches. Doesn't matter.
Either way, they should be dressing for every home game, ready to go at a minimum. If they don't travel (I don't know if everyone on the roster travels to every away game period, or what), maybe that's fine, but I'd get them that experience anyway. Doubt it's an issue of money.
This selfish idea that you can keep someone here for five years instead of four, needs to get out of your head. It's gone
whats more selfish: playing one or both “a few sets” and wasting a whole year of eligibility or keeping their year of eligibility for them if they aren’t going to be real contributors this season… This poster seems to think their opinions on the redshirt of Stella is more important than her own decision. Cook is not one to just redshirt an athlete without their input

Are redshirts not scholarshiped?

Are redshirts not scholarshiped? I am sure that it still counts if that SA is on the scholarship.

I’m torn on my opinion in the setter debate. I do think end game SS is a better setter. Redshirting her would be my option if she is not going to start. I trust the coaches. Maybe they are trying to keep her with next years class. Maybe Shaff will impress us with the middle connections this year. It obviously has been emphasized. All I do know is I’m very excited!

I wonder if mplsgopher has any inside information that neither Swenson wants to red shirt? It would seem so. I have no clue if they want to or not, but maybe they do, maybe they don't. If they do, I'm sure Coach Cook would be happy to allow it.

Maybe Shaff will impress us with the middle connections this year. That would be a bold move.
To be so incapable of doing it that they barely even try it (and it looks just awful) in matches, the entire first four years of being here.
THEN spring it out in year five. Very bold indeed

I have no clue if they want to or not, but maybe they do, maybe they don't. I'm in the same boat as you. I suspect all these other posters are also in the same boat, and are just projecting what they want.
I find it quite bizarre how a lot of times posters on VT get obsessed with specific individual players on the team. As if it was their sister or cousin. Except they're not. They've never even had a handshake meeting with these players, in most cases.
What matters is the team. Not individuals.

Yes, thinking that may be in order shortly. Good, good.
If only it were that easy to "ignore" anyone who doesn't think exactly like you and say exactly what you want them to say, in real life!
Pretty cowardly, if you ask me. But you didn't ask me
Fortunately for all of us, this is a message board where trolls can be easily ignored. I would never ask for your opinion on anything, so buh bye.

Maybe some day, if we're lucky, mplsgopher will realize it's not what he says, but how he says it.

Please just put me on ignore if you don't like what I have to say. Don't waste more time with personal attacks on my posts.
I'm not for everyone, I know. That's fine.
I will not modulate or dilute my opinions on players play or coaches decisions. I will make them as I see fit.
I encourage others to have an open mind and realize not everyone thinks like you. But you need to do you.

Like seriously, do you realize you just described yourself there? I don’t think anyone here is as “obsessed” with Shaff as you are right now. The audacity to call other people out without some self-awareness.

I don’t think anyone here is as “obsessed” with Shaff as you are right now. The exact opposite is true. I don't care if she gets benched. If that's what's best for the team at a particular point in the season, then it should happen.
I wouldn't have cared if she moved on from the Gophers. She had her four years.

Without SS available, we're also one injury to Mel away from having another completely disastrous year, record-wise. "Rebuilding" is all fine and good, but I tend to get concerned about a high-profile program's attractiveness when it has successive seasons of uncharachteristically weak performance.

If Shaffmaster gets hurt or plays really badly, there is absolutely zero reason not to pull the redshirt. SS has to know and understand that. You didn't come her to sit on the bench and lift weights. Hopefully it works out for what she and her family desire, but in case I just hope she's mentally ready for the possibility.
You weren't class of 25. You're class of 24 and you're getting a scholarship this fall. If we need you this fall, then you need to play this fall.
