Keegan’s career defining opportunity as Minnesota’s HC could be his ability to surround Julia Hanson with good players next season. This imo is a must. She’s too good of a talent to waste with another erratic team. She easily has 1st team AA potential next year. It’s important if KC wants success next season to bring in a starting pin, starting middle, and a reliable Lib/DS in from the portal. The good news is that Acevedo looks like she at least has a future as a solid DS and a best case scenario being a Gabby Gonzales type OH as an upperclassmen which you’d take all day long. Not sure her front row abilities will be playable by next season though. Stella should be a big upgrade at setter as soon as she takes the reins. Hopefully Kinney’s game translates well to high major college ball and is ready to go next year as she is needed. I don't see Cook bringing in a L/DS as he has Z, Kate, and Garr. I agree that he should bring in a MB and please make it a star MB. Hitter is tricky. There's Hanson, Wuch, Acevedo, Kinney, and maybe Schnichels, Crowl, and Gilk as well. Sure I'd love to see a star hitter come in, but I'm thinking not unless 1 or 2 of our currents leave. Cook also needs to quickly determine what kind of offense to run with Stella. Faster might be better.

Faster might be better. You’re listing a lot of pin hitters who would be good options at a school like Northern Illinois or Iowa. You also have to consider that 1-2 of those names will likely not be with the program come next season. At a place like Minnesota, Keegan has a duty to put strong, competitive hitters on the court. The only two I see with potential to be that next season is Hanson and maybe Kinney (we’ll see). Don’t see it with Gilk for at least several seasons. Similar deal for L/DS. Unless Cook thinks Garr can be a relied upon passer and defender right away or he’s vindicated in a feeling that Z can take some huge steps forward in the offseason, he owes it to Hanson to get some better passing on the court. Having 3 passers passing below a 1.9 or so will not cut it next year, or any year for that matter.

I agree she she had a great prep career, but Mel has been playing great this season.

One only needs to look at Wucherer and Landafair to see that a high level of prep success doesn't always translate to a high level of college success. Stella could be an upgrade, or turn out to be another Kennedy Orr....we'll know next year.

I’m trying to say this in a way that doesn’t sound demeaning because I don’t mean to give it that impression, but you won’t find many people (who don’t have a stake in the situation) who are very involved in the game of volleyball who would tell you that she has smooth dynamic hands or is capable of setting with any level of consistency when it comes to tempo and location. She does some things well, but setting is not one of them.

I’ll keep my mouth shut and not answer this question. I will say that I’d love to see her have a bit of a redemption arc in her final year (wherever that is) so that she can go out on a high note. Don’t know who wouldn’t want that for her.

It doesn’t help that PrepDig, PrepVB, and other recruiting media outlets are run by a group of “evaluators” who don’t even fully understand the game of volleyball and the nuances of what makes a highly effective player at their position. That is on top of trying to project how much a player has the capability to develop (which is a crapshoot). That being said, given what Ive seen of Stella I expect her to be a very solid setter for the Gophers.

Faster might be better. I don't agree with the take that Acevedo can't become an efficient attacker. By this time next year I think she will be. She needs some tempo and she needs the set location to be further out. If you watch the 4th set her and Mel are talking and Mel starts pushing the ball further out and she gets 3 kills in a short span. She's got a lot of work to do to improve her attacking but to say she'll be nothing but a DS with 4 years of development still in front of her is laughable. Julia with her extraordinary vertical jump is able to really make things happen regardless. Wucherer and Acevedo I think need accuracy on the hitting windows, tempo and an effective middle threat to hold the block. I think Julia will put up some really special numbers next year if Stella is accurate, allowed to run tempo and can get the middles going. Not a knock on Mel at all. I think she's a great athlete and I love watching her play. I think it's highly unlikely they go after an OH in the portal but you never know. Circle back on this next year but I think a 100% healthy Wucherer and improved Acevedo will be valuable parts of the new Stella era.

Next two seasons under KCook should be very defining for him in the development and RECRUITING THE RIGHT PLAYERS for the growth of this program.
Hugh McCutcheon. 2012-2022. 11 seasons. 277-74. (Focus was on the Pins) Mike Hebert. 1996-2010. 15 seasons. 381-137. (Focus was on the backcourt with the DS/L's)
