than her own decision. Cook is not one to just redshirt an athlete without their input Where are you getting this?? I've tried to ask, but the lack of direct, unambiguous answer is telling. You can’t force an athlete to redshirt. You can not let them play in matches, but it is 100% up to the athlete whether they use their fifth year, or graduate after four. (The coach obviously has a say in whether a fifth year is on the original team, or after a transfer).

You can’t force an athlete to redshirt. You can not let them play in matches The rumor I'm hearing is that this is not the coaching staff doing this, but it's what SS (and I assume her family) want. If so, then that's a major bummer and my hopes for this season just took a hit. But like I said, if there is an injury she needs to be mentally ready for the shirt to be taken off. She's not a class of 25, she's a class of 24.

Wow, what a mess. Always has to be that one toxic poster in every fan base I guess, right?…
Only a few hours away from the exhibition match so we can have some actual volleyball to discuss again!

I’m torn on my opinion in the setter debate. I do think end game SS is a better setter. Redshirting her would be my option if she is not going to start. I trust the coaches. Maybe they are trying to keep her with next years class. Maybe Shaff will impress us with the middle connections this year. It obviously has been emphasized. All I do know is I’m very excited! Without SS available, we're also one injury to Mel away from having another completely disastrous year, record-wise. "Rebuilding" is all fine and good, but I tend to get concerned about a high-profile program's attractiveness when it has successive seasons of uncharachteristically weak performance. Fortunately, a decision to redshirt can be changed at a moment’s notice, simply by going into a match and playing. If Mel were (god forbid) to be injured in week two, there would, I’m sure, be a discussion, and likely a change, in any redshirting decision which might have been made. If Mel were (again, god forbid) to catch a major case of sniffles, and need to take a match off, I *doubt* (but don’t know, of course) that Stella would be asked to forfeit her (theoretic) redshirt and step in for a single match. If Mel were (note the trend… g-forbid) to be injured Thanksgiving weekend, *and* Stella not played yet, I again doubt that the staff and Stella would forfeit the redshirt year, and have her step in for 1-2 matches, plus post-season play. I don’t *know* any of the above - of course. I *do* know that Keegan spoke with me about his belief that redshirting in general would become *more* common/frequent, so I don’t accept another person’s *opinion* that (non-medical) redshirting no longer has a place in college athletics.

The unfortunate part of that is if Shaffmaster is just simply, you know, plain ol struggling with setting consistency (in spite of being elite at serving, blocking, and adding a couple points a set with dumps/lefty swipe downs) .... that would probably not result in a shirt lifting.

This is getting as repetitive as the Old School (sand) Volleyball Facebook group lamenting the advantages of larger court and side out scoring for the millionth time.

This is getting as repetitive as the Old School (sand) Volleyball Facebook group lamenting the advantages of larger court and side out scoring for the millionth time. It’s going to be a long season lol. Ideally into at least the second week of the tournament! Sounds like that’s the goal for this team. Keegan has mentioned it a few times. At B1G media days and I believe it was the most recent practice that press was invited to. More or less saying how once you get to the second weekend anything can happen.

I have always wondered about this seeing as the setter is the QB of volleyball. So, when it comes to college volleyball coaches, are they looking at recruiting players based on the talent of their starting setter or vice versa...or perhaps neither?
I have agreed with many posters, when it pertains to the limited talent that Shaffmaster has displayed, when it comes to setting. So, what has confused me the most is our coaching staff (Past and Present) have made the decisions to bring in some very successful talented Middle Blockers (Myers, Gros, and Awoleye) but the season ending stats have not been the most positive. Then add the additions of Murr and Z to our back court in hopes it would improve our serve/receive passing game.
IMO it has become somewhat unfortunate that this program has decided to "put all their eggs in one basket" when it comes to Shaffmaster as their starting setter. Her defensive game is her "bread and butter" and outside of Wisconsin's Carlini she is one of the most talented defensive setters in the NCAA.
I believe Shaffmaster's true setting potential lies outside of our Gopher Program. If she decides to go Pro, we shall see what a team with proven talent all around can do for her game.

Can we all please move on from that Shaff conversation? I swear I have heard it every week for no reason. The season is literally starting TODAY!!! Where is the excitement?

Are redshirts not scholarshiped? Redshirts don't count against the schollie limit.

Are redshirts not scholarshiped? Redshirts don't count against the schollie limit. Yes they do. Redshirting isn’t even technically determined until after the season is over. (I mean, they can plan for it but the NCAA doesn’t care until after the season is over and they see whether or not you played.)

Are redshirts not scholarshiped? Redshirts don't count against the schollie limit. Yes they do count. Until next season, only 12 players can be on scholarship whether or not they play. A player doesn’t “redshirt” until the season ends and they did not play (or if a medical redshirt played less than 30% of matches). To be more accurate, a player doesn’t declare using a redshirt season until the last year, “I’m using my redshirt year” but nowadays redshirt is both an action, “she’s redshirting,” and a designation ,“she’s a redshirt Sophomore.” But absolutely RS players on scholarship count towards the 12 max. Next year, a roster cap of 18 will be enacted, and in this example if 2 players decide to redshirt, they remain on the roster, though don’t play. Teams cannot exceed 18 on a roster, though their rosters can be less than 18.
