After the scrimmage today, who do you think are the starters? S: Mel L1: Wookie L2: Julia M1: Phoebe M2: Calissa Opp: Lydia L: Z DS: Kate SS: ? Elise or Skylar ? I’m not convinced that these will be the starters in the middle or at the end of the season.

Any takers? Mel makes first team all big 10 you give me a hundred dollars, second team 50 dollars third team 20 misses you get a hundred but she has to be able to play the season.

Just some discussion questions if anyone feels inclined to share more thoughts. Not expecting exhaustive answers to everything! Thanks for the updates during the scrimmage!
1. Mckenna played every set, yes? Always OH1? Wondered if Julia would ever be OH1 with her experience playing opposite. 2. How did Lauren look? Sounds like she played more than Grote in the 5-1 with Mel. Missed out on front row opportunities in the spring while recovering from surgery so got more looks today? 3. Did Kate ever DS for anyone besides Lauren? Based on updates and Instagram clips it seemed like both OHs were six rotation in all sets. 4. Any middles ever serve? Mckenna with a bunch of aces is nice to hear! 5. Did Stella, Olivia, and Skylar not play? Didn’t see their names mentioned. 6. Back row attacks? 7. Thoughts on the 6-2? Chloe and Elise being the back up plan if Stella is redshirting makes sense to me but it’s not the 6-2 we’ve seen besides one(?) set in Europe. 8. Go Gophers!

I thought Lauren looked good. (I recognize that I’m not good at objective appraisals, though, so take with a hefty grain of sand) 3. I… don’t think so? 4. Nope (99% sure) 5. Skylar was SS for some of the sets 6. Seemed to be more back row attacks than before (not counting Samedy years) 7. We saw this (or similar) during spring play. I don’t think Keegan is considering it, but instead is using it to get more athletes playing and being assessed. 8. Hat’s off to thee!

What was Z's performance like throughout the match?
Did Stella set at all?

What was Z's performance like throughout the match? Did Stella set at all? I thought Z played well. Neither Stella nor Olivia played

I was a bit surprised that we didn’t get to see all the players on the court today but now that I think about it, Keegan was probably really trying to use this match to figure out his starting line up against Stanford and Texas and he didn’t want to experiment with some players that he knows probably won’t start. He will have more opportunity to have more players playing in the second half of the pre-conference matches.
I thought there was a big improvement in middle offense. Our middles are available and Mel really pushed that when she can. There was a sequence where she set a slide to Awoleye twice in the transition game.
Wucherer will be our 6-ro OH and she looks ready. She knows when to hit hard and to tip and score too. She seems to get her serve back now and it’s lethal. The other OH I think it will be a tight battle between Hanson and Acevedo. Hanson will probably start but I won’t be surprised if Acevedo beats her out. Acevedo is a real deal. She is a complete player and very smooth. Oh and a very good server and defender too. She reminds me a lot of Brooklyn DeLeye from Kentucky. Just so so steady.
Z will be the L and Thibault is a good addition in the back row and the spark plug. The defense was up a few notches from last season. You can just tell that from the first set. Iowa state players had to hit like 5 times for the ball to touch the floor. Everyone was going for the ball. It will be so much fun to watch!
Just based on what I saw today, granted I am not Keegan and dont have a lot of data points for all of them, this would be my starting lineup next week
S: Shaff OHs: Wucherer and Acevedo (Hanson might sub in for back row) MBs: Awoleye and Minatee OPP: Crowl L: Z DS: Thibault (for Crowl)

Who had the better connection with Mel today? Last season I felt Crowl was better at blocking than Grote and both needed to work on their back court defense.

I am probably splitting hair here but I thought Crowl played very well offensively and she blocked well too. For some reasons, Grote didn’t play well as I expected and she got dug many times, maybe it’s because Iowa State is such a good defensive team. I think either of them can start and I won’t surprised either if Grote start.

I'm all about putting the best players out there, but like others, I'm curious what it was about Crowl that might be putting her a step ahead of Grote. Lauren does seem like the prototypical Opp that could be so dangerous: big, lefty, seems smart. But she's looked so timid in the limited playing time she's had since she came on campus. Maybe she's coming into her own. If so, good to know we have her for another year after this (I think?? RS Jr.right?).

Honestly I think Grote will still start but it’s great to see Crowl playing so well. Maybe the hip injury she had in the off season really helps with her game.

I was curious what people would say about Crowl v Grote. My opinion is that Grote is more dynamic and I would give her the nod. However, today I think we had the same lineup in sets 4 and 5. I suspect Cook felt it was working and just wanted to continue and get the win. In her favor, Crowl's server was deadly in sets 4 and 5.

We have depth you guys! 😁
Interesting about Crowl vs Grote, I’ve always been a fan of Crowl’s block and I’m happy to hear that her offense is improving! How about Acevedo vs Hanson?

Are redshirts not scholarshiped? Redshirts don't count against the schollie limit. Ok so then people are upset with a player redshirting when it won’t cost that individual player anything financially?
