Redshirts don't count against the schollie limit. Ok so then people are upset with a player redshirting when it won’t cost that individual player anything financially? That response was incorrect. An athlete on roster, whether red-shirting, bench-sitting, or playing, uses a scholarship if they get a schollie.

Ok so it could turn out that a player who redshirts could have to pay their own way through their last year of collegiate eligibility?

They are able to get a scholarship for that 5th year. I don't think that the school must give a scholarship athlete a 5th year of scholarship, but I would expect that it is one of the things talked about when the coaching staff and student-athlete decide on red-shirting.

Ok, i can understand getting upset if your redshirt led to an eventual year being self funded but if a player that’s not slated to start at a position where there is significant depth in front of her, makes no sense to not to explore the redshirt. Also I think it’s a bit ridiculous to think that college needs to be finished in 4 years. It’s really not that simple depending on the school.

Based on the comments (I was not there myself**) it sounds like Acevedo may be the better defensive OH2 - possibility they play like US did a bit this summer with Plummer/Hanson front 3 and Kelsey/Acevedo back 3 rotations? Did we see Acevedo swing from there at all? Hanson is good swinging from either but it could help stabilize SR if Acevedo is a clean passer

If Stella Swenson was in the mix this year, she would've played yesterday. So we can put that argument to rest (yeah right, after every loss she will be viewed as the peerless saviour that is being hidden away from us).
Kind of surprised that Grote is in a battle after being our best overall player last year...this is good news for the team. We have a tendency to write off players (Crowl) if they aren't big contributors early in their careers, though there are countless of examples of players hitting their strides in their junior and senior years. Her libero stint in the spring should've been viewed as a sign of her all around game.
Nice to hear that Wucherer looked like the player that she is. I think the coaching instability hurt her more than anyone else...I'm glad she stuck it out and she'll be a better player and person because of it.
I'd love to see Grote/Crowl and Hanson/Acevedo split time in sets, rather than swapping sets like yesterday. If you've got the depth and the subs, you should use them. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense. The goal this year needs to be to put the pressure on the other side of the net. In 2023, the pressure sat fully on the Gophers for almost every match.

After the scrimmage today, who do you think are the starters? S: Shaffmaster L1: Wucherer L2: Hanson M1: Awoleye M2: Minatee Opp: Grote L: Palabiyik DS: Thibault SS: ? McGhie or Gray ? I’m not convinced that these will be the starters in the middle or at the end of the season. Translated this very helpful post so that it's accessible to those outside the VT elitist inner circle who pretend to be on a first name basis with our Gopher athletes.
I'll be providing this service periodically throughout the season, at no charge!

Any takers? Mel makes first team all big 10 you give me a hundred dollars ... misses you get a hundred but she has to be able to play the season. No need for the tiers, this here is the actual bet. But let's wait a beat to see if your pretend bravado still holds after a few actual datapoints. Not a glorified scrimmage, at home, against .... let me check my notes here ... Iowa State.🙄 And of course, no one should be profiting off this. The loser should simply be making a donation in that amount to the Masonic Cancer Center or some other such worthy cause.

*IF* a player who is choosing to take an elective redshirt is actually needed later in the season, say due to injury or what have you, then that could be an issue.

Also I think it’s a bit ridiculous to think that college needs to be finished in 4 years. Nothing "needs" to be done. Players want to play, not sit on the bench. 18 year women's volleyball players are plenty mature enough mentally and physically to contribute at high level immediately, these days. Hence why you would sacrifice your final spring semester of high school with your friends to come train early in college.
Some comments might have come earlier via misunderstanding of if a coaching staff was pushing the redshirt on the athlete, vs the athlete choosing an elective redshirt.

(yeah right, after every loss she will be viewed as the peerless savior that is being hidden away from us). Unless you're in the practice gym, you can't say for sure.
I'm certainly not. Guessing most posting here aren't either.
I will however conclude the following: if we don't see standard middle sets (1/1+/2, actually in the middle of the net), the kind that every other setter in the Big Ten can do, even on a non-perfect pass, then I'm going to conclude it's the same ol.
That said, we still had a great season in 2021. We'd all be thrilled with that season this year. Though I think a 2022 is more likely. Hopefully not a 2023 season.

I saw a Nebraska fan say that TL wasn't up to Nebraska standards in the back row. I didn't have the heart to tell them that we spent 4 years in Minneapolis discussing whether or not she had a ransom out with the coaches where she'd transfer if we didn't let her play back row. And look what happened anyway.
