How did Crowl play in the scrimmage? My biggest concern with Crowl is that she always seems to get tip happy and doesn't stay aggressive. If Mel is moving the ball around, I don't see how Grote doesn't get the start. But, I am also not in the practice gym. lol Since I live in Texas I am excited to watch them play at Baylor! Go Gophs! I wasn’t at the scrimmage either! I’m not sure. I haven’t heard any negatives about her, but sounds like her serving was very good. The thing I recall most about Crowl was her serving. She was solid in terms of hitting and blocking, although Grote seemed more dynamic to me. Although as some have mentioned, Grote goes through stretches where she is not effective. I can see Cook swapping them in and out, depending upon who is doing well at the moment.

I can't think of a scenario where the best 2024 Gopher team has Grote on the bench for long periods of time.
I'm 100% for mixing it up. A lot. If you've got depth, use it. Make the opponents think and adjust.

Set location has a lot to do with hitting efficiency on the right side, particularly for slides. My impression at the scrimmage was that Crowl showed confidence and good tempo, but was favored with less efficient blocking across from her. Could we see another Katie Harms-type ascendancy? Left handed OPPs have the technical advantage of the sets coming into their swing plane. Right handed OPPs typically contact the ball crossing their body which gives the block fractionally more time to accurately set their hands.
A snapshot of final stats has deficiencies. In the first set Wookie had more freedom and Grote was 1 1 9. In the third set while Wookie was hitting negative Grote went 6 2 17. In the 4th set when MN hit .485 Crowl was 4 0 8. In the first set only 2 1 5.
Grote's serves (6) were less consistent than last year. Crowl's serves were more difficult for ISU. Some of this could be the difference in spin off a LH server.
From our seats at net height near where the band sits we have a perfect angle to watch RS attacks. Some of Grote's HEs were cross court misses inside the ISU MBs hands.
I would predict there will be a game within the game this weekend as opponents try to match up their defense. One thing is for certain. If MN's first contacts give Shaff 3 or 4 (back row) options, our pins will see a lot more open court to swing into. MN's offensive spread which included 29 MB attacks is a GREAT sign.

I underestimated Awoleye's blocking contributions. Now that I have seen her stats, both from the recent scrimmage and from last year, I'm even more happy that she stayed her 5th year. I still think the Gophers could improve their blocking of the opponents middle attack.
Crowl played very well and hit with some authority. She also had some good floor defense. Grote is very good however and KCook may have had Crowl play more so he could evaluate her under some 5th-set pressure. Her numbers were better for the match overall. I think Grote will start but we will see Crowl also. It's a difficult decision for a coach.

I thought Awoleye was incredible on Saturday. Awoleye is incredible just in general. The Gophers are fortunate that she came back for her 5th.

I don't agree with him, but who needs an echo chamber? If you don't want to respond, no one is making you do so. A board like this can use people who are contrarians, are argumentative, and speak their mind. Keep up the good work, MplsGopher. I'm curious as to your thoughts on the Gopher's Sept 10th match. Do you still think Cook is committing coaching malpractice like you originally said? No, you're not, and I have no intention of responding further to any post of yours.

I went to todays practice. KCook talked a little bit. He said this team is better in August than they were last December.

It's so much more than "formations and patterns". And here again, you attack something that I never said or implied. I agree that volleyball, and indeed every team sport, has far more nuance and difficulty beyond initial formations of players and common patterns of player movement. Of course they do. I never said they didn't. I made a specific statement, and the words of that statement meant what those words mean. I was talking specifically about the (lack of) complexity in volleyball's formations and patterns, compared to some other team sports. That's it. I don't understand why you keep trying to translate that into something that I never said or meant to imply.
If you wish to continue this discussion, I'd be happy to do so in private message. Even I agree that, especially now with the season about to get going, this is too far off topic for the thread.
